So, here goes for 500pts of Cadian recruitment:

CCS: Vox, Mortar, flamer

PCS: Vox, Mortar
Infantry Squad #1: Plasmagun, Autocannon, Vox
Infantry Squad #2: Plasmagun, Autocannon, Vox

Veteran Squad: x3 Meltas, Chimera with Multilaser/Heavy Flamer

Scout Sentinel: Lascannon

This comes to 480pts, so room for some extra stuff. I havent touched Guard since 3rd so, I'm up for ideas. I know 500pts isn't much, but I need a starting point.

Go more firepower:

Heavy-executioner with Hb-210

This is a lot of firepower in exactly 500pts,
Psyker can kill squads of chaff units by himself and the 4 autocannons can wreak light AV, the executioner will murder small units of Teq in 500pts.

Only downside to this list is the lack of AA for AV12 flyers,
Mosty Heldrakes (which always ruin days).

Its not original, but I'd tell you to seriously consider getting a Vendetta. I expect that even with a price hike in more than half a year's time they'll be useful as they're AT, Anti-MC/Riptide, Anti-Flyer, objective snatching tool and troop deployment transport all in one absurdly cheap package. The model and the prospect was cool for me too.

At low points they're so invaluable that they are almost a no-brainer.

A cheap way (in terms of money) of making your Platoon considerably more effective would be to build an Al'Rahem model so you can outflank it. Its budget, still works at higher points levels and its flexible. Also works wonders with your guys having the plasmaguns in there, as they'll actually get to fire with him in there.

The Sentinel is alright, but honestly I'd only run it in support of a Leman Russ or two. Reason being I use it as flank defence (blocking charges and units) and mobile cover to compensate for its iffy price, and neither has much utility when its just defending Infantry as they can easily get cover and they're far more expendable than tanks.

Guard as a 5th ed codex isn't that bad, it has the ability to take obscene amounts of low ap shots (how many 2+can you roll?).

I believe the list above can take out flyers with the 4 autocannons and heck even the psyker with the 2D6 Strength 6 ap 5 shots! Only thing as i said is double Heldrakes at 500pts will make you sad... but then the dude is a jerk.

I don't think platoons are viable at 500, too inflexible and you have to pay a 130point tax before you get to the good stuff. Vets are still probably the best troops choice in the game. You can gunline as suggested earlier in which case you'll need a Russ or too many armies will just out shoot you. Personally I'd still go mechvet with Chimeras and a Vendetta. The Detta is just tough to deal with at this points value.
