I was just wondering how old some of the GW designs are these days.

I also wondered if any of their patents had expired and people could legally reproduce them as they are physical objects.

Or do they fall under copyright laws which last ages...

I believe their miniatures come under copyright, not patent.

I think the oldest confirmed model still in production is the basic Sister of Battle, which was released in 1997. There might be something older in the Collectors section, but that's not really general release stuff.

They recut the sprues for the jetbike more recently than that and switched them over to small flight stands (originally they came with large flight stands like the falcon and vyper). Not sure the exact date for that, but it was post third edition (1999).

I remember the falcon was pretty old.

Then you must be pretty young... and making me jealous. The falcon came out just before 2nd turned to 3rd. Jet bikes were there all the way through 2nd. Originally on the old hex flying base that all skimmers came on. Not sure if the sprue changed, but the design hasn't much.

I think the oldest model that's still in prodcution is either Eldrad or Ragnar Blackmane, although both switched to finecast.

The jetbikes and Falcons are of 2nd edition vintage, as are the CSM and SM bikes, and the Berzerkers (a sneaky bad kit) are either very early 3rd or late 2nd.

Blackmane is a good shout. SM bikes are also 2nd ed, but were much later than eldar jet bikes.

Yeah, SW wasTHE 1st codex so it probably is Blackmane and other old SW characters.

Calgar's 1994, but the Terminator Captain's much "younger", being 1998.

Oldest models in the 40k range?

The Ork Goff Rockers

The base tag says "(c) GW 90". Of a similar age are the Eldar Warlock with Singing Spear and Eldar Warlock with Witch Blade, both of which were released alongside the first Eldar army list in WD 127, July 1990

The Marine in Mk1 armour in the Space Marine Armour Through the Ages set is of a similar vintage, being released two or three months later, alongside this Wolf Guard

Although he was released as a "Space Wolves Captain" for 1st edition (the first 40k model I ever owned, BTW), and came with a backpack and cloak combo.

Until recently, the Epic Reaver Titan and some of the Blood Bowl Cheerleaders were older than that, dating to the late 80s.

Of the other models suggested, Ragnar Blackmane (and Ulrik, the Iron Priest and Njal in power armour) date to 1992, being released in WD 154 or thereabouts as just about the last army list for 1st edition (although the Deathwing Terminators were the absolute last article, IIRC). Calgar in power armour, the Phoenix Lords, Eldrad, the Falcon Grav-tank, Eldar jetbike and all those Orks date back to 2nd edition, so they're just young 'uns. Azrael, Ezekiel, Mephiston, Tycho, the rest of the Eldar Warlocks, the Imperial Fists Chaplain, the Space Marine Techmarine With Power Axe and Space Marine Apothecary 2 and Space Marine Captain in Terminator Armour and Classic Necron Lord, the Imperial Assassins and the Servitors without heavy weapons are also 2nd edition models.

The original warbuggy is even smaller than that one, phatonic.

Nope. That's a) bigger than the warbuggy and b) more recent.

I meant the original warbuggy:
