Joking aside, Thirty Seconds to Mars just doesn't have the right sound to encompass the tone and scale of the 40K universe. For me, I personally recommend this though it probably fits in better with Fantasy.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

I just see the world in a more noblebright anime-ish "This is the end, but we are gonna end with a bang!" kind of way, mainly because some of the fluffy bits are just so deppresing that I try and forget them as much as possible!
Yours is more of a "There is only battle!" kind of thing, but suits it well.

Sorry, that selection isn't even close to me to fitting the setting. The only thing it really shares that could be considered in tune with the 40k setting is the word 'war'. Frankly, "This is War" just feels weak and kinda naive given the setting of 40k, the lyrics (such as they are) are just...blah. And the song as a whole lacks any kind of gravity or weight.
Yeah, "This is War" is an anti-war song. If you think it's about fighting, you're completely missing the point of the song.
If you want something non-metal for 40k, you're looking at something like Yuki Kajiura's Salva Nos or Les Soldats before you start to get close to the theme (and those get decried as 'anime fan anime crap' despite being beautiful, european-styled pieces of music).
"That time I only loaded the cannon with powder. Next time, I will fill it with jewels and diamonds and they will cut you to shrebbons!" - Nogbad the Bad.
I'd submit sabaton for consideration
Does a good job of covering the hopelessness and grind of trench warfare, no end in sight, and no apprciable gains, as directed by a higher power. Has good depth and field to it.

hmmmmm, i dont see 40k in any of that, the old russian music you hear (deep and long) before the revolution suits perfectly. Full of dispair and anguish, dont nunderstand the words (im not russian...) and has that old catholic style sound thats common on movies. Ill have to find an example after work but someone else may find it.
I know this is an old-as-heck thread, but I was just watching the new 300 movie, and this re-imagining of the old "War Pigs" is just perfect for 40K. Sorry to stir up a dead thread.

See, the problem I think the others are saying is that in 40k there is no anime-ish anything. It's grueling, brutal and unforgiving. The human race is simply a machine designed to pump out more weapons and soldiers to die unremembered on an unknown battle-field fighting horrors from their wildest nightmares. Depressing and hopelessness is the entire theme

This is a better example ya posted heh. A bit faster tempo would probably be better but you're on the right tracks for epic, end of the world, slight orchestral feel.
Just my way of explaining the opinions of others xD

When I think of appropriate "themes" for 40k I think of film, TV, or video game soundtracks...very orchestral, little to no lyrics, that kind of thing. When I first heard this song I thought it sounded perfect for 40k:
I really like this one too, not sure if it "fits" 40k or not though. Maybe certain armies more than the setting itself.
This one makes me think Tau, it's got the right kind of industrial sound to me.
So yeah, this ended up being one big ad for Position Music I guess, lol.

It is kinda weird - I seem to have a different view of this franchise. Sure, it is made up to be dark, gritty, hopeless, all that jazz, but I am just not accepting that.
I can't accept it as a serious concept, because it never really explains to you why it needs to be this way. It covers its tracks by making people incompetent, the rulers cruel and life itself worse than it already is, making an effective status quo that doesn't allow anything to brighten the slightest.
I can't take it as parody, because it really wants to be taken seriously. Nothing is ever blown up to be completely stupid (Like the old Noise Marines), and I can, as such, not see how I am supposed to not take it serious.
Don't get me wrong, I love this franchise. Sometimes it just blows it up in a way it doesn't need to be. The universe doesn't have to exagerate to make me love it - I love it as it is.
Because when I think Wh40k, I think 80s British metal. As it should be. I know I posted things like Koyaanisquatsi and Nightwise, but when I think of it, those are more army specific. I long for the return of this version of the blast master.
