Hey everyone! I am sort of pushing myself into heroclix, and getting to learn the game, step by step, I already have a bunch of figures from both the regular superheroes version of heroclix, and of the lotr and hobbit series. I have a few maps, and of course dice. But i was wondering if there were any good or good to start with teams of figures i could use together when playing my friends, etc. I also plan on purchasing the hobbit- the desolation of smaug campaign set once i have enough $, or the 2 player game with only the 2 figures in it.
For the superheroes figures, i mostly have iron man 3 figures, since that was the main set i found whenever i was looking for them, etc, but i plan on grabbing maybe a brick of boosters, if possible.... or a few of the fast forces kits for maps, and minis, etc., any advice? Any would be great! Thanks!

I would suggest picking up the Avengers Vs X-Men starter kit, for either side. Both of the kits are pretty solid, come with Action tokens, maps, and 6 figures. They're pretty solid boxes, but they're like 40 bucks. I picked up the Avengers one and it's been pretty solid so far.

Personally I've had a good success in the past using an X-Force team from giant size X-Men mostly. Or If you wanna go a little father back: venom, carnage, anti-venom, toxin, doppelganger, make an excellent monster themed team & are all web of Spider-Man.

Is Giant size X-Men legal for modern age?

I honestly don't know, but the only reason why I'd be worried about starting with something that isn't modern age, is that most events (even casual ones) tend to be modern age. And from what I've seen, if you show up to a store and it's a friendly place, you'll find yourself inundated with extra commons and uncommons that people have, and as you expand your collection, you can pass on your extras.

So then would any of the sets like the iron man 3 minis be considered modern? or able to be currently used in tournaments etc? Cuz i see a lot of the ' golden age teams only' on posters in my local store, but i have never seen any charts or diagrams that would show what the dividing lines are for sets and their playability , etc

Modern Age is basically anything within the past two years. Much like Magic, it rotates a year's worth of figs out during the summer or so. If you buy any figures that were made in 2013, they would be considered Modern Age and are legal in all events, as "Silver Age" is anything with a card, and "Golden Age" is anything HeroClix. Now the other thing I forgot to mention is that only Marvel and DC sets are considered event legal, so the side sets like Star Strek, or Hobbit, Assassin's Creed, etc... aren't event legal but you can still use them to play with your friends.

So if you check out this page: http://www.hcrealms.com/index.php?page=units it has a list of every set ever made, as well as all of the models in those sets. And it sorts them by 'not full released', 'modern age', etc... So sets going back to September 2011 are currently in the Modern Age (if they're Marvel or DC).

If you're just looking to grab some figs and play with your buddies then no need to listen anymore

Whereabouts in the states are you again?

I prefer not to say detailed things about my whereabouts, but all I can say is that I'm around the Midwest

That's understandable, I was going to say, if you were near me, the store I play at is starting up free play nights on Wednesdays to get more people interested in the game.

There are also heroclix websites out the wazoo that can help you find a group that, if nothing else, can teach you the game and get you going.

hcrealms seems to be the best clix website out there, but some of the posters can get really heated about this game.

Jeeze, I wonder what it's like being on a site like that.

I played the game for years, and love to play it still despite any flaws. The great thing about clix is how much variety you have in team choice. Not everyone plays the same as me, but I just stated building dream teams of my favorite characters and trying to balance them together as a force. I would only buy a starter if you totally like all the characters therein. ($40 is rather expensive.) All you really need are a map or 2, the current rulebook, and a Powers and Abilities chart;. You can pick them up cheap from those links and then just start buying singles of characters you'd like to play. (Most of which as you mentioned you already have.) Check out the comments/rating for each piece in the HC realms units section. (Don't take them as gospel though, as Alfndrate said users are very opinionated there.)

Here's a few tips;

*As previously posted, Golden age encompasses all pieces, Modern only from "main" sets from the past few years. As you are playing with friends and from your comments your venue runs GA I would just buy what you like.

*Like any other game, a balanced force is best in HC; A combo of shooty, close combat tie-up, and support pieces that can outwit/perplex/heal ect. make for a good all comers team. But you have plenty of time to learn strategy, and there's lots of different ways to build a good HC team. (I could give some recommendations based on your favorite characters/playstyles.)

*Start small; there's a lot of figures in 11 years of clix, not to mention game mechanics, BFCs, Abilities, Resources, objects, ect. Heroclix sadly died at my venue partially because everyone was getting overwhelmed with trying to keep up. Which brings me too...

*YOU CAN"T CATCH THEM ALL! Unless you have a lot of spare cash, almost no other interests, and the luck of an Irish unicorn you will not be able to collect every set that comes out. Just focus on certain themes/teams/characters you love.

I'm laid up with a broken back this weekend, so if you want some more advice from a long time player, feel free to let me know.

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.
