So instead of studying for my finals I'm painting my beastmen army, i know..... Anyways, my goal for this army is to have each chaos god represented. i already have my 40 gor slaanesh block and I'm really happy with the way they came out. My goal is to do the ungor as nurgle, the second gor block as tzeentch, and the bestigor block as khorne. I've done some test models for the khorne block and the gor block and I'd like some feedback, they havent turned out quite as well as the slaanesh gors so i thought i'd ask Dakka for some advice.

I'm not the best painter in the world but I like to reach tabletop standard or at least close to it, i know some of the lines are a bit sloppy but i mean, its a unit of 40 gors so it's not THAT noticeable I'm mostyl looking for technique ideas and or differnet colors. The khorne model really doesn't pop like the other models and I'm just not entirely sold on the orange blue although that's the tzeentch color scheme i believe.

Give the whole model a wash ... Nuln Oil would probably work (Paynes Grey would definately work) to get some shading and then gently highlight over the top. Try this out on a test figure first.

I don't understand exactly what a wash does is it like watered down paint that runs into recesses? Everyone talks about washes but I never really understood how they work. Also do they change the color of the whole model? Eg, should I do the wash before say painting the brighter colors?

Effectively yes, but it also provides a thin layer of pigment over everything you brush it over so you get a translucent layer. Washes will generally change the colour of whatever you put it on. You don't have to wash a whole model, you could just do the cloth, for example, but its generally a good idea tomdo the wash before any details. The exception to that is when you are using the wash as weather7ng or as a means to alter the look of the detail itself.

Oh okay so you actually paint the wash on, I thought it was more like a dip. So I should get a wash to wash the skin of the gors, should I get washes for the hair and other colors a well or is it not as nessecary?

You'll want to apply a wash anywhere you want to enhance contrast and detail or to apply shading. Some people treat them like brush-on dips, applying a single color across the entire model. Others apply them more selectively, painting them directly into recesses and nowhere else (you may see the term "pin wash" used for this - it avoids the general surface staining that Flinty mentioned).

Most people, I'd say, choose a middle ground - total coverage, but with specific colors of wash applied to individual parts, as the color of their paint warrants (in the case of your Gors, black for steel and grey skin/fur, blue or mix of black/blue for hair, brown or red/brown for cloth).

Honestly, though, a thin wash of black over everything wouldn't be too bad, with the colors you've chosen. The orange may get a bit messy, but it's a subdued enough tone that it will likely look fine after a bit of cleanup. A warmer brown color would certainly look more natural, on that part, but I wouldn't call it a necessity.

I like everything on these models bar the cloth on the bestigor. I personally get put off by harsh highlights. That should be solved with a dark red wash. Glaze medium is your friend!
