Hi there, after a 3 year time-out in 40K I am planning to pick it up again. I started to plan a new 1500 pts army but the choices overwhelmed me and don’t make sense without experience in 6th ed. Can you help me make a start by giving tips and tricks for a build up.

For example: I read 2 units of oblits in combination with 1 defiler work great but I don’t know if this also couts for 1500 pts and what options I should or shouldn’t take on the defiler.

The army needs to be a capable army vs: SW, IG, Nids, SM and Orks (we do not tell each other what they play against)

I’m not planning to expand my collection yet and this is what I have to work with:

Named Characters:
Be’ Lakor (including the new rules set)
Ahriman (my favorite character fluff wise)
Typhus (the only nurgle mini I like)
Abbadon
Fabious Bile

HQ:
1 DP MoT with wings (worked great for me in 5th)
2 lords (one of which could do for a sorcerer)

T:
3x 10 CSM
2x 20 Cultists

E:
2x 10 1k sons (I favor Tzeentch for fluff and mini’s)
1x 10 Bezerkers
1x 10 Possessed
1x 10 Term (chainfists and 2 reapers)
2x Hellbrute
1x 7 Chosen

F:
2x 5 Bikes
1x 10 Raptors
2x Spawn

HS:
1x Defiler
1x LR
1x Pred
1x Vin
1x 3 Obliterators (old on small base and yes, I really should be considering the new models)
1x Forgefiend (converting it to mini Warhound T) (I liked this model where I disliked the helldrake)

I really don’t expect you to build me an army but I am currently at a loss.

Hello and welcome back to the hobby!
I would suggest to start by figuring out what kind of army you want to play. Another thing to decide on is if you want it to be a fluff list or a much more competitive list.
The mistake I made when I came back to 40k a while ago was that I just bought minis without a plan. What i mean is that its much more fun to build an army than piece it together randomly by the minis you happened to have/buy.
It is all up to choice really, gun-line, cheesy, fast, close combat or maybe you want to follow a more fluffy build and focus around how 1ksons where organized and so on.

In the end it really pays of to take a moment and figure out what your priorities are!

(sorry for repetition)

Thanks Elaps for you reply. I do agree that starting by figuring out what kind of Army I like is a good start.

I don't know how to best describe what I use to do in previous editions (And what I would like to have again) but this is what I used to field.
- I had lots of tzeentch stuff and my inv save drove my opponents crazy
- My Daemon Prince wings and MoT was one of the biggest threats
- I used to use Bezerkers but they did not quite did it for me and I replaced them with raptors (2 meltas + pair of Lightning Claws) which worked a whole lot better
- I used Terminators (MoT, chainfists and 2 reapers)
- My Thousand sons 1 unit was just for fun and they now and then were remarkable usefull
- My vindicator worked ok (it was just worth its points)
- My defiler was just cheap as hell and worked nice (pointswise a strong investment)
- I did field my obliterators a couple of thimes in 4th but they were dissapointing. I tried to field the once more in 5th but I couldn't get them to work again so I stopped using them (Altough it might have been just bad luck the one time in 5th)
- I fielded a variation of other units but their act have not made big enough inpact to specify how they did or did not work.

So I don't know if this fits with gun-line, cheesy, fast or any one of those terms but I think it might help make the sense of what I'd like my new army to do.

Oh and I do not want this army to be fluffy (except I do not like Nurge or Slanesh) and it would be nice if it is reasonable competitive and an all rounder (enemy wise).

I hope this helps to give more specific advice. Thanks
