I might just be dumb but HOW did the Emperor with all his skill and might, defeat Horus AND obliterate his presence in the warp??
Horus, if I'm not mistaken was, was all roided out on the energies of the warp AND was getting favor from all the Chaos gods and it is mildly understandable that he could kill him. But then full on uses his psyker powers to obliterate his remnants. Seems a little over the top to me.....

Well yeah! The emperor was just a man (as badass as we was) we was just a man, and he slayed Horus! Whens the last time a Guardsman and a CSM went toe to toe in cc and the gurdsman came out on top??

All in one blow too, don't underestimate what the Emperor is capable of. It should be noted however that the Chaos gods detected the Emperor's build up of energy and fled Horus' body just before the attack. So basically the enormous energy that had been gathered for an attack on a being empowered by all 4 Chaos gods was unleashed on a plain old primarch.

That is closer to the answer I was looking for! So they abandoned Horus and left him to his defeat

Yes, but the more interesting question is why did they abandon Horus? Was it simply that they knew the Emperor would destroy him, or was it possibly that while tied to Horus' corporeal form they were vulnerable to the Emperor's attack themselves?

Maybe the Emperor gathered the energy for such a massive attack to slay all the Chaos gods in one fell swoop, but failed and now sits on the Golden Throne forever cursing himself for not ending it all when he had the chance.

The Emperor is the greatest psyker to ever live. He did not just slay Horus, he blasted him out of reality, in such a manner that he will never again exist.

They fled from what appeared to be an event horizon of their imminent destruction.

That's how I've always liked to think of it. If true it certainly demonstrates the amount of overkill directed at poor Horus though.

If that can help you sleep at night, okay.
As for regular human vs CSM, Ciaphas Cain has a few Zerkers heads under his belt, and there's the story of the guardsman choking a Lord to death.

Just a man? O_o
He was one of those immortal demigods I was referring to, and the power source for the intergalactic supernatural space beacon.

Well, in the old William King write up, when the gods fled Horus' body the real Horus regained control. He realized what he had done and began to sob just moments before the Emperor obliterated him.

I... What? Where'd this happen?
As for E vs Horus, I believe the Emperor was getting beat, saw Horus kill a (guardsmen/terminator/custodian) and went beast mode. He defeated Horus, and the Fab Four fled his body. Horus realized he could not be trusted even though he realizes he'd made a mistake, so closes his eyes as the Emperor eliminates him completely. Maybe it was mercy to destroy his soul, as he was now beyond the warp.
