Hello everyone! My name is Unit1126PLL, and as many of you know I play the Armored Battlegroup army list. It's been my mission, since over a decade ago, to build a whole regiment of Imperial Armor. I believe that this ongoing project must happen in several stages, and I have done much research in order to determine what exactly constitutes an entire regiment of Imperial tanks.

It is my pleasure, however, to show my progress now. I have three Leman Russ tank companies, one Superheavy tank company, one Regimental Command superheavy company, two Commissar tanks, and a maintenance company. Here is the 1st Concordian Armored Regiment, complete with pictures!

Regimental Command Group:

Wrath of the Brazen God, the regimental command tank. Using the rules for '212 Arethusa', this is the personal tank of my regimental commander, Marshal Orlov Malinenko, seen with some of his crew standing in front of the tank.

Frater Ferris and Incomparable, the two escort Baneblades for Wrath of the Brazen God. Together with Indomitable (q.v.) these four tanks form the Regimental Command Group.

Indomitable, Lord Commissar Catherine Lynaris' personal tank. Originally a monument on Concordia to her re-conquest during the Great Crusade, the Indomitable was activated to fight during the Horus Heresy. Its most famous engagement was the defense of the Eternity Gate, on Terra, where it was deployed with an entire company of Malcadors to hold back the invading Chaos troops.

First Company:

Malleus Machinarum, First Company command tank, tank 101. Concordia-pattern Vanquisher.

Logos (111), Vis Chalybdis (112), and Vis Ferris (113) make up First Squadron, First Company, "Ferrus Fractatii"

Ferra Anima (121), Silica Anima (122), and Aura Anima (123) make up Second Squadron, First Company, "Ira Metalli"

Cuta Ferris (131), Cordia Ferris (132), and Mensa Ferris (133) make up Third Squadron, First Company, "Robus Ferris"

Second Company:

Lux Divinita, Command Tank, Second Company, Tank 201, Phaeton-pattern Annihilator

Ventus (211), Pluvia (212), and Tonitus (213) make up First Squadron, Second Company, "Tempestus Ferris"

Adger (221), Moenus (222), and Castellum (223) make up Second Squadron, Second Company, "Inexpugnabilis"

Milita Arbitis (231), Arbiter Fati (232), and Executor Arbitratiis (233) make up Third Squadron, Second Company, "Arbites Ferres"

Third Company

Mortuifer, Command Tank, Third Company, Tank 301, Phaeton-pattern Leman Russ

Indescribable (311), Stella Vitae (312), and Monitus (313) make up First Squadron, Third Company, "Siegelayers"

Tank 321 (321), Tank 322 (322), and Tank 323 (323) make up Second Squadron, Third Company, "Nameless"

Stella Domini (331), Stella Defendi (332), and Stella Imperii (333) make up Third Squadron, Third Company, "Stellae Mortui"

Fourth (Superheavy) Company:

Praesidatio Fides, Stellae Victae, and Deletatio Fides form the Fourth (Superheavy) Company, "Titan's Bane"

Fifth (Support) Company:

Armored Recovery Vehicle Arx, belonging to the 5th Company, attached to the Departmento Munitorum workshop

Aequilo (011), Zephyrus (012), and Eurus (013) make up Air Defense Squadron, 5th Company, "Anemoi"

Infantry Squad 1, 1st Platoon, 5th Company

Infantry Squad 2, 1st Platoon, 5th Company

Platoon Command Squad, 1st Platoon, 5th Company

Magos Coldatus Arcturus and Retinue, Departmento Munitorum Workshop, 5th Company

Basilisk Self-Propelled Gun Clamor, belonging to the 5th Company, attached to 1st Platoon

Salamander Command Vehicle Saggita Command Vehicle, 5th Company

Stormtrooper Squad and Vendetta Wing and a Prayer belonging to the 5th Company, independent formation.

And finally, before I let you all go, a picture of the entire regiment:

Thanks for your views ! Any critique at all would be appreciated. I also have lots of fluff and stuff that I will most likely post in this thread over time.

I must say I really like seeing an armored regiment. Since I have started playing 40k and IG Ive loved the leman russ. Started small with a squad and Ive now finally accumulated enough for a company. Now that Ive seen this Im pretty interested in wanting to expand to regiment size.

I dont have the book but I would assume Imperial Armor second edition would have tips on what is included in an armored regiment correct?

But congrats on the armored regiment, have you thought about getting any fluff going for them? Maybe like document games where you used a squad or something.

Have you ever played an apoc game where youve used most of the regiment?

Thanks.

Imperial Armor Volume 1: Second Edition does have the TO&E for a Krieg armored regiment in it, and it goes into great detail about the organizational systems, squadron markings, et cetera in other regiments as well. It also repeatedly emphasizes that there's no real "standard" regiment size, which is good - the Krieg TO&E has well over 100 tanks in it.

And I do have lots of fluff on them! I keep track of kills and whatnot, and it's awesome stuff. I'm going to post some here once I get it all sorted out.

I've played an Apoc game once with First, Second, and Fourth Companies, and another with Fourth and Fifth companies, but never the whole regiment together. Third seems to be the bastard child of the group, lol. Probably because 2nd Squadron isn't painted yet.

Tanks are most glorious.

I've got 10 russes myself and a single Baneblade, one of every variant, and I'd like to flesh them out into something a little more practical and realistic at some point. Mostly I need standard battletanks, but that's a project for the future.

That being said, I haven't found the Armoured Battlegroup particularly good at, you know, winning if the opponent knows what's coming.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

I usually ask my opponents nicely to not tailor, although you're right, it doesn't win very well. The tanks can't score, which makes objective games very difficult. I've found, however, that by placing objectives in the open and parking a Russ or two in cover overwatching it, you can often scare the opponent to not even try.

The other problem is the deepstriking melta units that can nail the Warlord. This is the biggest problem I've had - it's hard to protect the Army's warlord from being melta'd if they have deepstrikers. There are a few ways that seem to help, including wrapping it with chimeras or placing it in the corner, where the board edges make a significant deterrent against deep-strikers. And, of course, I've had units die horribly in the attempt from landing on him, so it's not always a one-way street of death.

TheCaptain wrote:You do know this isn't where this goes, right?

I considered putting it in painting and modeling. But I also wanted to add some fluff later, which the P&M guys aren't interested in, so I figured I might put it in background. Then I figured some tactics discussion would be awesome (like above), so I thought about putting the thread in Tactics. Then I thought 'eh, maybe I'll put in a TO&E with some points costs' and then thought about putting it in 40k Army Lists.

I ended up in General Discussion because I figured (and hoped) that this thread would turn into a rather generalist discussion.

I am mad jealous of how good a mass of vehicles looks when the Imperial Guard puts them together. That, and you can usually build one fairly inexpensively as people abandon Guard to do other armies.

Thanks, and it's true. A major modeling wall that I've hit now, though, is the Mark VIII Leman Russ. The old Mark VII Phaeton-pattern with the big turret and badass powerplant in the rear looks awesome, imo, and is the first model I bought for 40k. The newer Mark VIII models look silly as hell, because the turret, while wider, is lower, which makes the oversized battlecannon go from "amusingly scaled" to "immersion-breakingly scaled." For me personally.

This means, of course, that I'm basically stuck siphoning old Mark VII Russ kits from former players. But at least they get a good, appreciative home.

After-Action Report
3/09387|041.M42

From: Lord Commissar Catherine Lynaris, Regimental Commissar, 1st Concordian Armored Regiment (1CAR)
To: Lord Marshal, Departmento Munitorum Segmentum Command, Segmentum Tempestus
Copy: Inquisitor ++REDACTED++, Ordo Xenos

Lord Marshal,
It is my sacred duty to report the arrival of a new enemy upon the battlefield. The Tau Empire's industrial and technological strength continue to improve. While it is no match for His Imperial Majesty's holy warriors, it warrants notice nonetheless.

It is similar to the new “Riptide” suits. Our troops have taken to calling the machine 'R'Varna' after shouts heard during the battle. At any rate, I will now begin the report proper.

Walk in His holy light,
Lord Commissar Catherine Lynaris, 1CAR

Midafternoon, the first squadron of the 1st Company rolled upon the enemy positions. 1st Platoon, 5th Company joined them in their Chimera armored transports. Attached Imperial Navy assets included the Vendetta gunship Wing and a Prayer though its Stormtroopers were busy with other business. The final element was myself, riding Indomitable in the vanguard.

The battle started out well. Under the command of Podpolkovnik Illius Krasnov in Malleus Machinarum/101, a Concordia-pattern Vanquisher, the infantry units deployed from their Chimeras. Across from them were a small squad (three) of the nearly ubiquitous Tau battlesuit 'Crisis' surrounded by a swarm of drones. Lasgun and plasma gun fire from the two infantry squads downed many of the drones, which dove in sweeping arcs in front of the incoming fire in what appeared to be rather suicidal attempts to save the suits. It was all for nought, however, as a single thundering blow from my very own Indomitable's battlecannon left only a smoking crater where the black-armored battlesuits were.

Elsewhere, the two squadron vehicles (Vis Chalybdis/112 and Vis Ferris/113 of the Ferrus Fractatii) engaged a single enemy Broadside that appeared on the second floor of a damaged building. The Broadside proved impervious to their battlecannons, but one of the alien drones was clipped by shrapnel and fell smoking to the ground. Malleus Machinarum/101 fired one of her rare Hunter shells at the new Riptide lurking barely in sight behind a building, but once again the round was intercepted by a rather unfortunate drone.

The enemy's return fire was ineffectual against His Imperial Majesty's tanks, although some surprised infantrymen were killed by the invisible Stealth battlesuits. The Riptide suit appeared to malfunction, its force-field sparking and causing apparent electrical damage as the suit twitched and rattled. Nonetheless, its fire managed to blow the gun off of Chimera 513 and destroy Chimera 514.

The next major event was the destruction of Malleus Machinarum/101. Enemy Crisis battlesuits jumped in from an unexpected quarter, punching holes in the rear armor of the tank with their weapons. Although the ammunition did not explode, the tank did catch fire and the crew was forced to abandon her. The suits, including what appeared to be the enemy commander, did not survive return fire from Vis Chalybdis/112 and Vis Ferris/113.
Eventually, I was forced to abandon Indomitable, which had suffered multiple armor breaches, though not before running down and destroying the rather irrelevant enemy Broadside suit, which had come down from its perch on the ruins. In trade, however, Infantry Squad 3 in Chimera 513, missing its hull weapon, nonetheless managed to drive deep into the enemy's rear areas and deploy into cover. Eventually, having suffered a number of damaging hits from Wing and a Prayer, the Riptide apparently suffered further electrical damage as its main gun appeared to throw out a massive number of sparks and possibly even flame, before the whole suit stood immobile and sentinel over the battlefield, wreathed in smoke and totally inert.

The only enemy unit left alive was the Stealth unit mentioned earlier, who were able to elude the remaining tanks and infantry in the growing darkness. The 1CAR held the field, and though the loss of the Indomitable was a grievous blow to my pride, the damage was found to be reparable (as the tank did not explode), and its thermic reactor was found still operating. Even as I write this to you, Lord Marshal, I await word from Magos Coldatus Arcturus and his workshop with regards to the repair of such an ancient and venerable engine of war – nay, Lord of War. Similarly, Malleus Machinarum/101 is reparable, although that is more thanks to the durability of the Leman Russ design than it is to the ineffective nature of the enemy's guns.

Perhaps with the knowledge of the weaknesses of the electrical systems on the new enemy suit, the Inquisition and His Most Holy Majesty's Imperial Guard will be able to avoid such losses in the future.

Nice report! I enjoyed reading, you should create a chain of reports in the battle report section.

I plan on doing the same once I get the whole first company painted up.

I also know what you mean with the turrets of the newer tanks as well. I liked the older versions more but I got into the game just as the newer ones came out so I only have 3 older ones and of the 3 only 2 of them have sponsons so theres one thats not like the rest.

But all the rest are the newer tanks. Ive been searching to find another older one to make a squad of 3 but for now Im just going to continue to have squads of newer models.

I will put a thread chain in the Battle Reports section, but I will continue to post them here as well, as I intend this thread to be a record as much for personal use as for the perusal of others.

I'm pretty sure it's more than 18,000 points at this point - I forgot to adjust the number. I guess I'll have to add them up now.

And who says that a true servant of the Emperor cannot serve in His Imperial Majesty's tanks? Who else will do it?

For this battle, we played the Battle for Dal'Yth battle from the Farsight Supplement, which my ally was running. The Chaos Space Marines took the place of the Imperial Space Marines in the scenerio, and brought 3000 points. The Imperial Guard brought 1500 points, and the Tau Empire brought 1500 points, to match the 3,000 points of the other team. The Imperial Guard army also included an allied detachment of Space Marines. The rules used for the regimental command Baneblade are the rules for 212 Arethusa, which is indeed a regimental command baneblade itself.

After-Action Report

From: Marshal Orlov Malinenko, Regimental Commander, 1st Concordian Armored Regiment (1CAR)
To: Inquisitor Lord Grendel, Overseer of the Eastern Fringe, Authority (Rank 1) on Ta'u, Ordo Xenos

++REPORT SEALED BY ORDER OF HIS MOST HOLY INQUISITION; CLEARANCE LEVEL VERMILION REQUIRED TO PROCEED++

++CLEARANCE ACCEPTED; OPENING FILE++

Inquisitor,
I am writing to inform you of the success of your plan. We were able to simultaneously study the new Tau suit and rout the "Steel Panthers" Chaos warband from the world in a dramatic engagement. We were even successful at destroying the Chaos Warhound Blood Strider with the assistance of the powerful Tau suits.

Per your orders, our Naval transport was re-routed an we conferred with your acolyte on how to proceed. Just as you predicted, our arrival on the world was hindered significantly by a warp storm, though it did prove navigable. As such, however, the Tau were already hard-pressed by the Chaos forces overrunning their world. It is unknown, precisely, what the Chaos legions were after, but the Steel Panthers warband dragged along an enraged Titan, Blood Strider along to the war.

Another small, but perhaps worthy, note: A Space Marine Strike Cruiser Power of Knowledge was found to be orbiting the planet upon our arrival. It immediately contacted us and offered support, though inexplicably did not send much. Our landing forces were reinforced by Iron Father Elix Atropos and a small squad of Space Marines in a Rhino. They belonged to the Logicians Chapter, whom I had fought with before and was pleased to fight with again, though I have never personally met Iron Father Atropos before.

I hope we may continue to serve your research,
Marshal Orlov Malinenko, 1CAR

It was late morning by the time I was able to assist the Tau from my perch in Wrath of the Brazen God/001. Without waiting for the rest of the regiment to disembark, I set off with a small force of Tau of the Predator Cadre and support units from the 5th Company including a Tech-Priest Enginseer with a servitor retinue and Arx, our recovery tank. I did not wish to lose the Wrath of the Brazen God/001 if it could be helped. On the way to the front, Iron Father Atropos joined our marching column in his Rhino.

At the front, the attacking Chaos troops were throwing themselves upon the Predator Caste in several sectors. They were holding on, though, by employing the mobility of their suits to the fullest. It was a strategic demonstration the likes of which I had rarely seen. Blood Strider, though, was leading a breakthrough of Chaos forces in the outskirts of the city, and so it was here that I brought my small company.

The opening volley of the engagement was a tribute to the immense firepower of Wrath of the Brazen God. Waiting until Tau firepower from a Broadside and a Riptide battlesuit (data attached) stripped the Traitor Titan's void shields, I ordered the tank to open fire. The Titan shrank back under the impact of the Baneblade Cannon an its supporting weapons, the lascannons and the demolisher cannon. It was severely wounded, staggering about and bleating from its loud hailers. The return fire, however, was terrible. A unit of stealthsuits was assaulted by ravening Slaaneshi Keepers, wiped out to a man in a flurry of scything blades and whipping tongues. The Titan itself charged and fired its Plasma Blastgun at the Wrath of the Brazen God/001. Catching a Logicians Dreadnought and Rhino in the explosion, the thick armor of the Baneblade's frontal hull absorbed the energy of the blast. The Dreadnought, however, exploded, showering metal fragments everywhere, while the Rhino ground listlessly to a halt and began to smoke. The Vulcan Mega Bolter on the Titan's other arm buzzsawed rounds into the Riptide suit, shattering the drones but ultimately failing to do meaningful damage to the Suit itself. Around Blood Strider's feet, the ravening hordes of Noise Marines and Daemons continued to advance unhindered.

Fortunately, it was at this moment that other units arrived from the backfield. From the skies, Tau suits recently liberated from other duties rained down on the enemy, causing havock in their lines. Chimeras 513 and 514 arrived from the Regimental dropzone, dispatched to ensure the safety of the Wrath. Lord Commissar Catherine Lynaris was leading them, riding in 513 with the squad. Their arrival and subsequent las volleys wiped out the lead Slaaneshi elements. The rest of the Line fired again at Blood Strider, wounding it further but failing to kill it. A valiant unit of Crisis suits, however, landed just behind the poor Titan, firing fusion blasters into its vulnerable rear armor decks as they descended. There must have been an uncontrolled reactor breach - the Titan stopped and quivered for a moment, before blaring out a single note of defiance as its reactor detonated.

The detonation wiped clean much of the enemy army, which had been clustered around its feet. The Wrath crushed a Soul Grinder under-tread, and its main gun and demolisher cannon finished off a Forgefiend that survived the titanic explosion. After this, it appeared that the Steel Panthers had been repelled. But it was not the case! Swooping low, a flying Daemon Prince (ref:SP0103) landed with a thud next to the Riptide, who turned. The Daemon lifted itself from the ground and flung itself towards the Riptide, snarling in rage. The hapless robot could do little to fend off the creature, which shredded the machine with alarming rapidity. However, Tau aircraft arrived to support the counterattack, and the flying Daemon Prince was caught up in an aerial battle from which it could not find escape.

But it wasn't enough - the loss of their Titan and the practically unharmed nature of Wrath put too much pressure on the Steel Panthers. Under intense counterattacks on all sides from Tau suits and Imperial tanks, the Chaos assaulting echelons fell back, and the city was saved. This single dramatic engagement must have broken the back of the Chaos warband, as they fled the planet in droves after the news of the Blood Strider's demise spread.

Hopefully, this report and the attached data packets and vid-feeds will help you in your research, Inquisitor.

I hope this isn't necroing the thread, but I have more pictures from a recent Apocalypse game in which nearly the whole regiment got to participate. (MAY2014)

Here is the Pregame Assembly Area for the 1CAR

Supported by a hydra from the regiment's 5th company and by elements of a Titan Legion and the Fire Foxes Space Marine Chapter, the Regimental Command Group takes up its positions on the left flank.

Next are a pair of images showing the deployment of the 1st Company in the Center, supported by 4th (Superheavy) Company and a battle company of ultramarines:

By the middle of Turn 1, the Stormblade had suffered some damage, but the advance was barely harmed at all, the thick armor of the Leman Russ tanks proving its worthiness once again.

By turn 2, the Advance had been stymied somewhat by the unexpected arrival of Ork bikers on the right flank. However, Demolishers from 2nd company can be seen arriving in the second echelon to engage and destroy them.

On the Left Flank, the Star Foxes' contribution had been nearly wiped out by unexpectedly heavy resistance, while the Adeptus Mechanicus elements inexplicably departed the field with haste. However, the Regimental Command Group fought on, engaging and eventually destroying a Phantom Titan in a hail of baneblade cannon fire.

On the right flank, a hitherto unopposed thrust by enemy daemon engines was not only deftly parried by Third Company, but was utterly annihilated in the riposte.

Finally, a unit of deep-striking Traitor Terminators sought revenge on the 1CAR for the destruction of their Daemon Engines, and attempted to destroy the Command Group. However, Frater Ferris, after some frenetic maneuvering and with the help of half of Second Company, survived to deliver the Emperor's justice upon the heretics.

Overall, the game was a blast, and I've even forgotten who won. Four Ork superheavies and a Phantom Titan fell to the guns of the Concordian tanks. 1st Company bore the brunt of the fighting in the center, and weathered it well, suffering only 60% casualties, which was well within tolerance. Third Company received recognition for tactical acumen in the frantic mobile battle that occurred on the right flank, and Second Company doggedly pushed ahead in the second echelon. Fourth Company did very well, engaging and destroying two Ork superheavies, but bore the brunt of the return fire and lost two of its precious vehicles. Lastly, Fifth Company performed spectacularly, the AA umbrella provided by the Sky Eagle Manticore and trio of Hydras deterring or destroying six enemy aircraft.
