The linked FAQ covers most of your options. My only completed Bones minis, thus far, were painted starting with the bare plastic after a thorough wash, rinse, and dry. Getting a solid basecoat took a bit of doing, but it definitely worked - densely pigmented paints like Reaper's HD line or Citadel Bases (I assume - I have old paints, so mine were actually Foundations) make things easier. Don't thin your paints much, if at all, as the plastic is hydrophobic (watery paints just bead up, instead of laying down an even coat).
I haven't started painting the most recent batch of models, yet, but I can at least confirm that Vallejos PU primer went on beautifully, both brushed on by hand and sprayed via airbrush, which will likely be the route I take going forward. It strips off easily using the usual methods, if you need to, but resists rubbing and gentle torquing perfectly and took some actual force to scratch off with a fingernail - enough that it felt like I was actually deforming the underlying plastic to do so (note: all tests performed after 24+ hours of cure time).
