So it's time for another heart-wrenching exercise in cleaning, tossing and finally acknowledging that there are some project that will just NEVER HAPPEN.
In today's case it involved a visit to a box that's followed me around for over 10 years now, my box of Misfit Toys which I thought would really, totally, surely be great for 40k.
I already tossed the Shermans with Merkava turrets I used as Leman Russes back in the day (I should have kept them, they were actually pretty good) now for these...
Picked up for a song on clearance these Micro Machine Imperial Shuttles were going to be some kind of ornithoptor for a Rogue Trader IG army (an IG army led by a Rogue Trader that is) either using VDR rules (RIP...) or counting as Chimeras (this was 10+ years ago, no Valkyries at that time). I'd give them underslung cargo pods and maybe lop off the top fin to make them look less Star Wars.
The snowspeeders would have to be VDR, something tame like 11/10/10 fast speeder, TL las cannon.
This puppy, a prototype version of the Snowspeeder, is larger and I'm still tempted to do it up as a cargo shuttle terrain piece. So tempted...
These pups have only followed me around for 5 or 6 years, i got them in China and fell in love. They have rivets and are boxy and fit perfectly in the 40k aestetic. They'd make great Storm Talons or Gyro Copters for a Squat Army.
Last of all I have an Aliens APC turned into a Chimera. I think I might have actually used it in a game or two.
So anyway all of them are probably headed for the trash unless I have both a burst of ambition and sudden window of time. But I hope some of y'all see some potential or inspiration for your own projects.

At the very least donate them somewhere. No point in throwing away perfectly good models. The Aliens APC has to be worth something as well

If they are worth nothing on eBay, at least give them to someone who would make use of them.
There will be loads of players who would take these models off your hands and put them to good use.
(I have enough half-built and unbuilt kits not to want any more.

Actually seriously think of the children, I don't know Trinidad but surely a local church will have a program giving toys to children. That would be better than the trash.

My employer does Toys for Tots but they require new unwrapped toys.
Maybe I'll do an ebay dump of them.
But what I really wish for is the time/energy to actually finish the projects I had in mind.
And space to store them...
Anyone else got a box of misfit toys they were SURE would make a great miniature project?

I have 4 boxes of misfit toys and many many parts organizers of toy, model and salvage parts for scenery building. I usually pick them up broken, or missing parts at resale shops for 1-4 dollars each. I might never around to all of them, but they form the basis for much of my Terrain Building.
By the way, if you want to send me (I'll pay shipping + a little on top) the Alien's APC and the Chinese VTOL's. I can promise you pictures of them all nicely painted up and incorporated in a massive sci-fi battle that I'm running at this year's Little Wars Convention.
Back to Misfit toys, no pictures of the current misfits, but here's how many of my misfits have ended up:
A Thomas The Tank Engine Brendam Docks playset (mine came without tracks or crane).
Becomes Squat Bunker complex.
A Fisher Price Geo Trax Toy
Becomes Sci-Fi Dumptruck
Ertl Farm Buildings
Become Urban Warehouses (The big one is a converted HO Engine shed, also found at a resale shop)
Toys R Us "Fast Lane" tank truck (I bought this one new for 8 bucks)
Becomes Mad Max Fuel Truck
And that's just a few of them. I take a bit of pride in rescuing old toys and turning them into great gaming items. Though it must be said that one has to be a bit picky sometimes. It'd be very easy to end up with bins of more old toys that one could ever hope to paint.
Right now some of the things I've got on tap
-Two Fisher Price Shuttle lauching pads slated to become multi-story chemical plants a'la Necromunda, probably to be used in a deadzone game.
-A combination of Pokemon Building and Toy-Story recylcer complex parts. Already assembled, awaiting being painted up as a multi-story slum building
-I just bought a beautiful GeoTrax Eleveated Train station.
-Most of a Power Ranger's "Deluxe Pyramidas" that will end up as a Giant Sci-Fi Landing craft.

It's amazing what a good paint job does to those toys. They don't look like cheap plastic anymore. I'm really impressed by the sci-fi dumpster truck. I would never have expected that to look so different

Poundstretcher shops are a good place to find that kind of cheap trashy toy that can be repurposed into a hardcore Grimdark SF vehicle.

What with all the hype about the Star Wars X-Wing miniatures game, how do those imperial shuttles and snow speeders fit in for scale?
Could be useful?

Well KK, if you want to sell any shuttles/planes I'm interested by far! :-) I'm building a ZM board and want to create a tile or two that represent a shuttle hanger and they's be prefect! or if anyone else has something similar?.....
and on a toy note! I simply love going through all the old toys I've hoarded over the years, that was until my ex finace threw everything away! so I've been slowly googling and trying to collect some of the things i used to have, from G.I Joes to MadBalls and those old skool rock transformers this thread is already making me google again!

I don't have an island of misfit toys, per se, but I have bought quite a few model kits I was supposed to turn into stuff for 40k but I have instead converted into clutter.
Some notable ones:
Dragon Wagon. I thought it would be a good battlewagon, and it was cheap. Got home and realized my misunderstanding of scale means it would probably be slightly too small for a Grot Mega-tank.
Another battlewagon that never happened. In this case the scale was more or less OK, I just was too unmotivated.
I thought these might make good Chimeras. Didn't get as far as opening the boxes, I believe.
This Sherman that was supposed to be a Leman Russ. I actually got about halfway with converting it, and the size was more or less spot on.
Also some other kits I got for Kitbashing and then never did - Black Orcs, Trolls, and so on.
