The positive response to my first attempt at this has inspired my to make another report, in hopes of improving on the last. Thank you all for the interest. Disclaimer: this report contains nothing competitive in nature

Codex Space Marines vs. Codex Dark Eldar

1150 points. (again I know a random number)

Dawn of War deployment
The Scouring

5 Warriors (venom dual splinter cannon, blaster)
5 Warriors (venom dual splinter cannon, sybarite, agonizer, blaster)
Ravager (3 dark lances)
Ravager (3 disintegrators)

Deployment

Dark Eldar deploy first

An arid and barren plain, formerly an Imperial Agri-world.

6 objectives. Dark Eldar get the 4 in the forest, the 1 on the hillside and a 2 in the ruins in their deployment zone. Space Marine get double 3's and a 2 all in the corner ruins of the board. This area will likely become the focal point of fighting. (sorry for the small numbers)

The Imperial Specters deploy a large force in the northern ruins on the edge of the battle field. Tactical squads man the walls, while heavy support units prepare to leap forward and repel any assaults.

The raiders of the Kabal of the Shrouded dagger assign a warrior squad to hold the objective (4pts) in the forests to the south. In the north, the Archon and his Wych assault part deploy in the ruins, observing the enemy across an open field, while another warrior squad is tasked with holding an objective (2pts) at the same position. In the middle, a cadre of venoms escort a ravager in the open space, hoping to use their speed to avoid small arms fire and prey on Astartes units separated from the main battle line.

Having secured a strong tactical position on the edge of the northern town, the Space Marines are in strong command of 8 points worth of objectives (double 3's and a two). In the south they deploy the lascannon combat squad with a rhino in support, exploiting the open fields of fire in the vicinity and hoping to harass the fragile warrior squad off a vital 4 point objective

Turn 1

Space Marines attempt to steal. 5 no dice.

What I say: That corner Space Marine position will be a tough nut to crack, and because it holds 8 vp's, it won't be possible to ignore it. As I have learned, assaulting terminators with wyches in 6th edition is fairly useless, so instead I've decided to go ultra aggressive. I'll try to exploit the DE speed and surprise my opponent by launching a swift assault on the tactical squad forming the firing lines. If I'm fast enough I can wipe them and remove any hopes of claiming the double 3's. That way I can sit on the 4 in the forest and maybe take the game. As for the rest of my army, they will try to eliminate the other scoring unit, while using their speed to stay away from boltgun fire.

Dark Eldar:

The Archon of the Kabal of the Shrouded Dagger leaps down from his observation post atop the second floor of a ruined imperial administratum building and gracefully hops back unto the sleek Raider anti-grav craft that is hovering next him. Without a word he signals the steersman to begin the attack vector, and with a low thrum, the craft effortlessly begins to pick up speed and glide forward. The Raider breaks from the edge of the ruined township, another craft emerging to move in unison. Upon the decks of the attack transports, pale aliens stand in silence, eyes locked forward, eager to feed upon the living.

The venoms break from the formation in unison and move to target the combat squad wielding the lascannon. After a small hell storm of splinter fire (36 shots) the Combat squad loses 4 Marines and the lascannon is destroyed.

The Raiders move 30" flat out toward the Space marines...

swooping down on the frontline in an attempt to discourage the use of inaccurate ordnance weaponry

On the outskirts of the town a Ravager makes short work of a Razorback APC armed with a Twin linked lascannon,

Space Marines:

Librarian Vespasian says a prayer to the Emperor and opens a vox channel to his battle brothers. Imperial Specters, ready bolters and stand fast. Let the Alien filth break itself upon the armoured plate of the righteous

The vindicator trundles forward making way for the behemoth assault warriors it ways shielding. It fires the demolisher cannon at a squad of warriors lurking in ruins across the road but scatters off.

The lone survivor of second squad withdraws to the rhino, hoping to find some relief from the storm of splinter cannon fire.

A Terminator squad repositions, setting up the cyclone missile launcher with clear fields of fire to the Ravager gunship. Firing two missiles the Ravager is glanced by the first and jinks past the second. The rest of Space marines fire is ineffective.

The assault Marines come around the corner of the ruins and charge the Raider, destroying its Dark lance.

Assault terminators assault the Raider .NOTHING. WOW.

Turn 2

The venoms and the newly arrived disintegrator Ravager pummel the terminator squad with splinter fire and searing plasma completely wiping them off the board. The dark lance Ravager pops the rhino, forcing the lone survivor to disembark.

The Raider transports slightly slow their approach to ready for disembarkation as bolter rounds ricochet from their lightly armored hulls and enemies throw themselves at the craft in an attempt to bring them down by hand. The vampiric passengers begin to unsheathe wicked serrated blades, the cacophony of battle pulsating through their translucent veins. For the first time since the raid began against humanity's supposed finest, the Eldar overlord speaks. The soul of the blue creature belongs to me

Through speed and incredible luck, the two Raiders make it through the rapid fire of a tactical squad (bad shooting and 4+ saves) and the full assault of terminators and an assault squad (wiffs all around). The gladiators of Commoragh leap to the ground and prepare to put on a very messy show.

The wyches shoot 2 Marines to death with splinter pistols, losing 1 of their numbers to a flamer during the charge. Ignore the assault terminators!

Parrying a wickedly sharp dagger with his amoured fist, Librarian Vespasian looks up to see a slender figure in white crystalline armour stood motionless amongst the chaos. Clenching his teeth in body consuming hatred, the Librarian grips the hilt of his force sword with two hands and steps toward the arch villain. The Dark Eldar Archon slightly smirks in amusement and abruptly disappears in a swarm of shadow miasma

The champion of humanity warlord trait grants the Librarian d3 extra VP's if he kills the warlord in a challenge so he challenges the Archon. Probably not the best idea but....thus is the price of heroism I suppose.

The Archon unleashes some intiative 7 ap 3 nastiness on the Librarian. The fight is over in an instant. The death of the Librarian claims the Slay the Warlord" secondary objective for the Dark Eldar.

The other wych squad leaves the opposite combat squad with two Marines alive.

Spaces Marines:

Save the scoring units!

Well the scoring units of the Space Marines are dwindling. The sole survivor of second squad makes a run for a crater while the the rest of first squad struggles in combat.

The only shooting come from the stunned vindicator's storm bolter that can only snap shot. nothing. The assault units charge into the fray, hoping to save the scoring units from annihilation.

The assault terminators and the jump pack squad pile in wiping BOTH squads of wyches. The Archon stays in combat on a insane heroism. Unfortunately they were too late. All of the tactical Marines are slain.

Turn 3

Dark Eldar:

The Archon stands in defiance. How long can he survive?

The back and forth firefight of the prow gunner of a raider and a Marine firing a storm bolter from the vindicator hatch results in the tank's explosion.

The venoms run down the lone marine in the valley and punish him with splinter cannons.

The assault terminators charge the Archon in the ongoing combat. Though the lightning fast Archon is able to dispatch 3 assault marines with his vicious alien sword, he finally fails his shadow field and is squished by a thunderhammer.

The Dark Eldar comfortably sit on 6 points of vp's while the Space Marines have only 2 non scoring units left. Though the termies would likely make it across the road to shift the warrior squad, the assault marines could not make it past 3 venoms and 2 ravagers to the opposite end of the board.

The game is called.

Dark Eldar 4+2+slay the warlord+first blood= 8
Space Marines 0 :(

Confident that her Archon had been sufficiently pulverized into mince by the disgusting Monkeigh beasts, the Sybarite calls off the raid, recalling transports to embark troops and egress toward the webway. With the throne of the Kabal in question, her power depended on keeping these Kabalite warriors alive...for now anyways.

Conclusion

Sorry to end it so short, but when you throw the majority of 1150 point forces into melee on turn 2 it probably wont last that long! The Dark Eldar had an incredible first turn in both shooting and staying alive. Glass hammer theory seems very true.
If the Space marines hadn't flubbed the shooting at the two raiders, the game would have been much different. They should have called that tactical doctrine! (And the assault marines whiffing too. yikes).

That daring assault into the enemy stronghold sure paid off.

Thanks for reading! Let me know what you think. I liked the organization of this one beter, but I still need to get a hold of a better camera. Should have my Necrons and a new snow board finished this week. I'm ready to put away the Dark elves for a bit!

As an imperial that was frustrating to read. Those marines deserve to lose since they neglected their training.

Also, check out my history blog: Minimum Wage Historian, a fun place to check out history that often falls between the couch cushions.

Really nice report, painted models and scenery add so much. But wouldn't the SM have picked up one VP for killing the Archon?

Thanks for this, it's encouraging me to finish painting enough of an army to do a fully painted battle report.

Yeah, the Marines lost that game on Dice in their first turn, you can't afford to not hurt DE early, their ramp up of action advantage is too high to allow it.

Very nice report, pictures and some fluff is so vastly superior to the not so brilliant videos that seem to be becoming the bog standard approach - I very much appreciate the amount of effort and time you put into uploading this and writing it up, thank you.

Nice battle report, thank you! The board was very open in the middle, giving lots of firing lanes, I'm surprised it turned into such a melee game despite that.

Very nice and simple Librarian conversion too, I like it.
