I have no idea how this will turn out...

Okay, the experiment is thus:

Assume that I am new to 40k, and looking to start an army. I have no preferences, and I put up a list of all the printed codex armies in 40k. But. The army I'll choose is whichever army gets the least votes.
How will you vote?

We see that usually Dakkanoughts will either recommend the army that is more effective or they have a personal bias towards, but I wonder what will happen here.

This thread might die within a single post, or it may lead to some interesting discussions on the topic, I have really no idea.

After you have voted, please post what you voted for, and why.

I would spare this user and vote for the armies i hate fluff wise. Which is a hard choice due to hating most of them I went with tau because they look aweful.

I voted Dark Eldar. There are a number of armies I'd not recommend to a new player, but DE top the list.

My vote goes on Space Marines; There's too many of them around, and they are the ultimate "I am every good guy, +1".

Space Wolves. They are like Space Marines, except better. So basically a beginner army +1

I would recommend against BA and warn against DE. BA are in a bad place right now for new players learning the game (ie one or two very niche builds are tough enough to survive mistakes) and DE are a tough army to learn but if the person is willing to learn then they are incredibly rewarding and look great.

Um... Adepta Sororitas automatically win in the "who gets least votes" race, since you didn't include them on the poll.

They don't have a printed codex. Otherwise I would have included them

Since when are TV tropes a good thing? Generally, they illustrate a lack of originality, no?

I voted space wolves because they are pretty much ultra marines with decent infantry swapped for dogs... Plus their tactical squads swap bolters which are essentialy the main and one of the overall best weapon for marines with chainswords and bolt pistols? Also they look awful with their huge cartoonistic hair and beards :/ don't even go there newbies

I voted Tyranids because amongst all the armies, I think they are the least beginner friendly.

Dark Eldar IMO the least starter-friendly army to collect out there.

If I could not vote more than once, I'd also pick Chaos Daemons. I've seen alot of players pick up Chaos Daemons because they like the models, then get discouraged cuz their shooting phase lasts a minute, while their opponent is rolling from buckets to bathtubs with all their firepower.

They are more of a catalog of elements of fiction. It's like the old saying goes, "There is nothing new under the sun".

Oh, right, the topic! Imperial Guard. I wouldnt recommend it for newer players since the army is pricey and it really doesnt allow players to experience a good chunk of the game meaningfully.

I never claimed the Guard (or the role they fill in 40K) was "new", just that it's boring, uninspired, inappropriate and infinitely better done elsewhere (while simultaneously most things in 40K are done better than the IG).

I voted tau because I want to spare you the bandwagon branding and secondly because I am a tau player myself (it is nice to diversify my opponents).

On a reverse I really enjoy the IG models (DKoK) and their fluff. Dead Men Walking is my favorite 40K book and any judgement about IG fluff should be made after reading it.

Why does their codex being in print matter? It's still a codex.

I voted space marines. They're very common. I would've voted for space wolves because I hate them but I thought I'd leave my personal grudge out of this

Guess this is where the SoB players line up for an option on the poll?

Also looks like you'll probably end up playing them OP since at most it'd probably get about 4-5 of us.
