I was just given a large amount of Tau from a buddy who hasn't played since Tau were a new race to 40k. Using them and my Eldar, plus a few new models to fill in the gaps, I am trying to come up with a decent list. I'm somewhat skeptical that this has too few marker lights, although I'm not sure what to drop.

Orkses is never beated in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die so it don't count as beat. If we runs for it we don't die neither, so we can always come back for anuvver go, see!

Well I don't get what your commander is for. He's not the buffmander nor a Marko here's somewhere in between and unable to do either job. If you want MLs and you want him shooting drop the MSSS & VRT and get a drone controller and 2 marker drones then swap the pathfinders over to marker drones. Now you have 6 Bs5 MLs rather than 5 Bs3 ones... Or go buffmander dropping the weapons and getting the C&CN. Join him to a Riptide and it won't need MLs.

Riptides don't need VTs blasts can't hit flyers. They are terrible AA units.

Do the Devilfish need BSF with an 18" range?

Ionhead is better for Hammerheads, that S8 Ap3 blast is the real hitter of the tank. You're also a little light against AV14 but the range you do it at compensates. But switching out the Hammerheads to the superior Ion Cannons means you'll want a bit more. You're not very efficient against AV14 as is a melta crisis team would fill that gap.

Given the mech feel of the list DAs or Guardians in Wave Serpents make more sense than jetbikes.

You have very little AA with just 2 Broadsides as you sole threat to aerial units.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

Yes my Colour is Black but not for the reasons stated mainly just because it's slimming... http://imperiusdominatus.blogspot.com

The Twilight Zone

Agree mostly with flingit. I take it the commander is currently partying with the broadsides? Still drop the MSSS, but keep the VRT just in case. I also usually take the onager gauntlet, the utility of an S10 hit is too cheap to pass up. Also consider stims if you want to really tank shots.

Also agree about dropping the VT's on riptides. If you want to consider AA, use the heavy burst cannon over the accelerator.

Smart missiles are a decent buy on fish if you have the spare points. Consider maxing out your fire warriors for more scoring presence/dakka.

Wave serpents are stupid good, albeit more expensive than bikes. Perhaps compromise with a serpent, and a 3 man bike squad for scoring?

Your pathfinders are currently a very easy target, and high priority. The rest of your list is MC's, tanks, or T4 2+ armor. They eat fire, sure, but will probably die. That said, your list is not really that dependent on markerlights...

I agree the ionhead is better than a hammerhead unless your going with longstrike. The ion overcharge is better than the rail submunition, while providing decent countering against light armor and more dakka with the main gun.

Try to squeeze in a 3rd broadside. Makes better use of the commander buffing the unit, and its another broadside for more dakka power.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

I took as much of the advise as I could and took a second go at making this list work

Hammerhead w/ Ion Cannon, BSF, DP, SMS - 141
Skyray w/ SMS, DP, BSF - 131

Fire Prism w/ Holo Fields - 140

Shadowsun joins the Fusion Crisis team and goes on a tank hunting spree, beefing up my AV 14 killing ability. With high AV targets covered better, I did like the idea of the Ion Cannons, which freed up a few more points. I dropped the broadsides entirely and took a skyray to help with anti-air. I still wasn't able to toss in a wave serpent though. I'm really just not seeing where to get the points. As it is I feel this is light on troops. I do think the waveriders aren't bad, and should make good objective grabbers late game even with the rest of my infantry mechanized, but would still gladly take a serpent or two if I knew what to drop for the points.

Edit:

I think this could work to get a few serpents in there:
