I admire the sentiment and idea, but the categories are nothing like as expansive enough. Might work better with categories by material for a miniature (so that would allow single character piece, best box-set etc.) rather than by company?

Not along the lines of the OP, but here's my pick of the year (only really going off stuff I've bought here):

Best GW products:
1) New Tactical Squad
2) Deathwing Terminators kit
3) New Space Marine Codex

My best hobby deals of the year:
1) 80 old Warzone minis for around £25
2) 2 old dire avenger boxes (10 men sets) for £23
3) Deadzone Mega Deal

Best non-GW products:
1) Deadzone
2) DFG Eisenkern (not got any yet, but they look amazing and it would be unfair to leave them out.)
3) Mantic Warpath Enforcers.

All in all, a good year for the hobby. I've got close to 200 models painted this year, got more games in than previously, found a new gaming club, started 2 new games, and started a new army for 40k.

Hopes for 2014:

The new IG codex remains largely the same.
I can finish my Ultramarines Battle Company.
Mantic get Hard Plastic Warpath models sorted (I'll buy a ton if they do)
GW release a Smaug model that is at least vaguely affordable.

Obviously GW stuff is still the most popular, but it's remarkable how much the other games (and their presence on the forum) has grown over recent years. IIRC at one time there was just an 'other wargames' section?

It's also nice that there seems to be a lot less 'us' vs. 'them' nowadays - think a lot more people these days are picking and choosing from a bunch of different companies, dipping in and out according to what takes their fancy, rather than just sticking to one as though they are following some kind of creed or religion. Take a look at the 'plans for 2014' thread to see what I mean, the mix of things people are collecting and hoping to buy, to see what I mean.

The sci-fi/fantasy wargaming scene has grown so much over recent years.. there is just so much out there, often quality content and for any taste, to choose from. And, thanks to the internet these games can now find groups of players easily and grow. So, while having 50% of the poll options might be right in terms of demographic, it's a bit.. conservative/old-fashioned(?) might be the correct way to say it, especially considering this kind of forum doesn't just cater to the casual fan, but to miniature-collecting connoisseurs and full-time hobbyists. We shouldn't be creating artificial lines between GW's, PP's or anyone else's work. It's all part of the same hobby and industry.

Break it down into categories similar to those used in painting comps, rather than by company:

- Best single character
- Best unit/squad
- Best large monster/animal/vehicle

If you wanted to go further, you could categorise each by fantasy/sci-fi/historical.

And, what about some 'best game' awards to cover new games released this year?
- Best new skirmish system / Best new mass-battle system / Best new boardgame etc. etc.

Then people could just post what they wanted, rather than being just focused on the company names and the fact that what they like is not being represented.
