4 x Rookie w Shield Upg
Luke + Biggs + Wedge + stuff

Are all supposedly popular, not taking too much of an interest in competitive play I can't comment on how well they do, but I've played against both and they are certainly challenging (albeit I wasn't running hardcore lists myself to really test them)

I've also played against 3 x Blue Sqdn + HLC which is a swine too, I'm 1+1 against that, but the victory was solely down to me running two Interceptors and their superior dial and both having higher PS, allowing me to get out of and stay out of arc.

I tried the trench runners in both no luck 2 wins in 8 games. I'm not interested in being that guy who has to win every tourney. I'd just like to come out middle ground or above average. however I'm just not seeing how to get past the tie swarm or the 2 firespray list with out 2 YT-1300 Han, Luke, Lando, Nein cheese. If thats the only way to beat Imperial 50%-70% of the time then I' m not impressed with the game. I play attack wing and do very well so I know how to move ships pick priority targets etc.

In assuming I'm missing out on clever card/ship combos

I don't know what's going on with your group. But your results are far from typical.

A Rebel list won the 2013 World champ, and a Rebel list came in 2nd at GenCon. In fact someone a few months ago tallied up a bunch of tourneys and found that all in all, Reb lists won about half the games.

You're not missing out on some sort of silver bullet, and there's no special trick to beating the Tie Swarm. The Worlds was won with a 2 X-Wing and 2 B-Wing list, all generic pilots.

Actually, the Worlds was won with Biggs and the rest generic pilots. Here's a link to a blog post by Paul Heaver (the guy that won) talking about how to play with and against his list.

@RS Any chance of getting the lists played so we can see what's going on build wise?

Edit: added blog link.

Assault missiles?

I've been working out lists, and every one that has less than 4 ships has a single assault missile somewhere. Either on a push the limit a wing or a yt-100.

Tie spam hasn't given me trouble since.
