What other types of primer are there other than the games workshop spray? And are there cheaper ones that last longer or ones that are just as good?

Loads of others.
For modelling/ wargaming specific, Army Painter do a range.
For cheap, decent and easy to get in the UK, go to Halfords and get some of their grey or white auto primer (or black if you get lucky, I can never find it).
Wilkinsons do a range that includes black and white primers.
If you are happy to use brush on rather than spray can, then almost every paint range has their own primer, or you can use Gesso from an art shop.
There's a pretty endless choice out there, and GW will usually be one of the last choices for primer for me.

Halfords grey and white autoprimers are what I use (generally their white spray as I generally like to paint with washes).

The 'Halford Black' is just Matt Black Paint from the halfords range. While not really a primer... It does a great job, maybe running into some issues with rubbing off on metal models but with plastics its every bit as durable as the grey primer is.
One of my fav's from there is the 'Cammouflage Khaki Paint' ; they do 4 colours in 300ml cans aimed at creating british army cammo, the khaki one of those is a nice very matt neutral beige, just wish it came in larger cans :(

This gets asked about every two weeks.
Do a search on Spray Primer.
I personally use either armory brand or just hardware store brand primer

Rustoleum hardware store primer *that specifically mentions it bonds to plastic*. Also, remember to get black, grey, and white for that zenithal priming!
