Hello all,

Just wondering, what paint pots do all of you use?

After taking a break and coming back to find half my GW paints are yet again dried out, after much swearing I decided I'm going to purchase some pots. But I don't want to go out and buy a bunch of random pots to find they also dry out and lose another $100 of paint, so wanted to see what tried and tested paint pots you guys use. Frustratingly, the old old old GW pots (the ones in the tall hexagonal pots) have managed to not dry out despite being, mmm, wow, like 15 years old now. I don't mind not having dropper bottles, just want something that will reliably keep the paint fresh. I've heard even the Vallejo paints don't last that long.

Do you have pots that will keep paints good for many years to come?

i use P3, and i love the pots...
they are like the old GW ones, which i also have (still good after over 20 years) and the paint lasts forever...
not to mention, the P3 tones are great...
i switched when they came out, 7 years ago, and haven't looked back...

cheers

I love the p3 paints but hate the pots. So i switch them over to dropper bottles. The paints also last longer that way.

Same story with the gw base paints.

Dropper bottles can be gotten off amazon dirt cheap. But they are shipped by boat from china so order in advance!

15cc Natural are the ones you want. made and shipped from the US.

I transfer all my GW paints(currently only use select Base Paints) to these as well as my home washes and glazes. Otherwise I use Vallejo Model or Game Colour ranges which are already in the same type of bottles.

I too prefer my dropper bottle paints. I have not had any dry out after several years of use.

One note; if you think you are ever going to use an airbrush - start with airbrush paints - it makes thing much easier later.

the minitaire line is very good airbrush paints in a good assortments of colors.

best of luck!

But are the dropper bottles the best for longevity? I don't really have a problem with pop-top except for the fact GW pop tops dry out.

I found a couple of places that sell the old school GW pots, but the only one that will ship to Australia isn't overly cheap.

Only the last one will ship to internationally. They're also the most expensive by a long shot :(

It's dropper bottles for me. P3 paints do dry out in their bottles, but I've never had that issue with dropper bottles, even in these bloody 38 degree days.

Dropper bottles will take much longer to dry out in the bottle, but the trade off is that you often squeeze out more than you need so pots can last longer if you're using that color heavily.

The other thing about dropper bottles that I find really useful is that it's much easier to keep your mixes consistent.

So being an Australian, where abouts did you buy your dropper bottles?

The Tin Soldier along Kent St (or maybe it was Clarence St) in Sydney. They've moved to Penrith, so I haven't visited in a really long time.

Maybe you could give them a ring and ask if they still carry those?

Good Games in the Sydney CBD may also carry them.

If they work for you then not at all. Save a bunch of cash too I imagine.

Yeah, craft paints are fine, I just already have lots of models that are painted certain colours and want future troops to match. Also I'd sooner just buy a certain tone that I like than try and recreate it. For example, I've always found it hard to mix browns that I like, and jsut as hard to recreate them a 2nd time even if I did make something I like.

I prefer dropper bottles because they won't dry out... ever!!

Miniature paints are more cost effective than craft paints.

I just saw the Minitaire paint set isn't terribly expensive. Tempted to just buy that and forget about the GW paints for everything but base colours and colours I've already locked in for my armies.

Anyone used them? How are they for brushwork?

They certainly are not cheaper per ml. Unless he is using a lot more of them to achive the same results as he would with miniture paints I dont see how that's the case.

I don't like buying large paint sets personally. They work out cheaper per pot but it's often false economy as you often will never use many of the colours,

I 2nd this notion, i only have 3 p3 paint's right now, but i would like to replace all of my current GW stuff with them. Perfect consistency as well.
