I am painting up some Samurai Miniatures and some of them are holding severed heads. I will want to paint some kind of blood effect on the necks of these heads when I get around to it.

Which of the two is the better product for this and blood in general?

Blood for the Blood God is more convenient, you can use it out of the bottle.

To achieve a bloody effect with Tamiya Clear Red, you may have to faff about with adding black and/or brown inks, thinning, etc.

Depends on your tolerance for faffing around, I guess. The end result is pretty much the same to my poor, failing eyes. Personally, I can't stand faffing around, so it's Blood for the Blood God for me.

*Disclaimer: I have not personally used Tamyia clear red*

Blood for the blood god does make things a lot easier but I doubt it would be just as good.
It's just an ink, maybe a little thicker than the usual. I hear people rave about Tamyia and claim it is the best blood effect ever, after having tried Blood God I wouldn't call it anything special at all.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I love my Blood for the Blood God Blood Paint. I use it for scary eyes, crystals and much more. Pretty easy to layer it to the thickness you want and so on. I recommend it as its as easy as shaking the bottle and applying.

The one problem is its easy to go over board the Blood for the blood God Blood Paint.

IMO BFTBG pees all over clear red. No mixing, a better pot and more glossy [like wet blood]

The decision was made for me. Games workshop was closed, the place selling taymia was open.

A better pot?

Go on, spill, you've not used TCR have you?

I have used red ink for the severed heads with blood around the neck with great effect before the Blood for the blood god came out; that is better drybrushed on around blades for blood splatter, not blood gushing out from the wounds.

I have used Tamiya, and the pots seal themselves with dry paint about 3 times after you first open them. They really are gak.

I have never had that problem with them.

I have had that happen, though not as badly as GW's old screw tops that practically needed a wrench to open them. I can usually open them by hand just with one of those rubber can opening doohickies. I've not had a Tamiya dry out on me though, which GW paints do constantly.

Tamiya is the superior blood effect if you're really trying to make it look good. If it's just a quick tabletop job to get them ready then no shame in using the GW equivalent. That's basically the purpose of these new technical paints, quick return with minimum hassle.

And yeah if you're sloppy with the paint Tamiya will glue itself shut. Just be glad it has a textured top to grip unlike testors smooth metal tops, that stuff will take a pair of pliers to peel off.

I went with Tamiya in the end. Games workshop wasn't even open plus the Tamiya is only £1.60 a pot which is cheaper then GW for a larger pot.

Will probably pick up the GW rust at some point though.

Yes.... that's it. Clear red is terrible and none of you should ever use it again, in fact, send all of the paints you see to me, for research....

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

I hear clear red is really hard to acquire for some people. There is a hobby craft near my gfs parents that sell it which was lucky.

To get a convincing effect for blood, I will mix Tamyia Clear Red with UHU Glue and some brown ink, it makes for some nice effects;

My pot of clear red had the paint slicked on the screw as soon as I opened it.

It wont need to be quiet as extreme as in your picture but I think your method will work very well.

The new GW technical paints are all great, the clear red is also first class modeling gear.

I'm especially pleased though that GW are producing paints that help people of all talents produce models that can easily look good. It's such an encouragement to kids and people who maybe enjoy the gaming aspect more that they can easily paint a decent miniature. Not one to give praise to GW but have to applaud when they do something well.

they both work really well, you have to do a little mixing with clear red which really isnt a problem, i've just recently picked up some GW blood and honestly i really like the GW one, i find it quicker to use and imo it looks really good
