Subject: Leaked Images of the January Hobbit Release
So it looks like January will be give us a Laketown release! Whilst I'm slightly disappointed not to see Beorn in Bear form, leaving us with a model that cannot be used (unless you search out Majestic Bears Miniatures - Now Shadow and Flame for his Bear model) I was looking forward to this release.
This release included Bard, Master of Laketown, Alfred, Captain of the Guard and Laketown Guard models.
The Bard pose is different to the one we see in the sourcebook but is also a gorgeous sculpt, one I'll be picking up! Seems to be the pose we first see him in, on the rock with Great Bow drawn pointing it down om the Dwarves as they get out of the barrels.
Master of Laketown, Guard Captain and Alfred are exactly as expected (and I'm expecting to see all those power gamers out there picking up Alfred to exploit his special rule…
But the real area of controversy comes with the Laketown Guards. Impressive sculpts, both Jamie and I from the GBHL channel were considering getting a force of them put together, painted by DMS of Shadow and Flame, for the channel battle reports…
But instead of a plastic box set, it looks like we'll be getting a finecast clamp pack… three warriors (either spearmen, bowmen or swordsmen) Now the leak shows a price tag of €20 which usually translates to £15 in GW terms… that's £5 per model. And not even for an elite soldier, but a cheap troop type more suited to hordes of warriors.
It will cost us £60 just for a single warband, which is going to annoy many! And just as we felt finecast was on it's way out, we get finecast troops! My only hope is that this was pre-decision to move all GW models to plastic and are a relic of when the movie was planned as 2 movies, not 3.

My thoughts: Gandalf is nice but do we really need another version? Bard is fairly dynamic but look a tad bland, Master and Alfrid are pretty bad models, especially the faces. Laketown Guard are not the best models, and also massively overpriced. If you want that kind of look, I imagine any kind of 1300-1500 Middle Eastern historical will do fairly nicely, and you get a tonne more for the price.

I imagine will see at least two more, as they'll probably do a Dol Guldur and Battle of Five Armies one, because, yknow, his cloak blows in a slighty different direction and his hat is at a different angle.

Actually, I kind of like the Master's model. I agree with everyone else about Alfrid though... yikes.
I wonder if GW will ever release a Smaug model though.
Faithful... Enlightened... Ambitious... Brethren... WE NEED A NEW DRIVER! THIS ONE IS DEAD!

Compared to their older LOTR releases these look like fisher price toys. The painting is vulgar, the sculpting is sub par, and they look like plastic. GW used to be able to turn out models that looked brilliant, not like a pre school educational toy.
I hope the actual models are better than these, having said that I wont be buying any.
Oh man, the first monster I see I'm going to sneak up behind him, whip out my wand, and shoot my magic all over his ass.
There is nothing in this release that will make me get my wallet out, esp looking at the prices.
That should have been a plastic warrior box and a couple of finecast characters. How difficult would that have been?
Can only hope the last film gives my gaming group a decent release to refresh our warbands. Come on battle of 5 armies!

Really?
Spill it, you don't even know what fisher price is, don't you?

Off the top of my head, and just including Gandalf the Grey:
LOTR: Moria (plastic), Moria (metal), pre-moria (with hat, metal/FC), on horse (metal/FC), Rivendell
The Hobbit: Goblin Town, White Council, Unexpected Journey, Desolation of Smaug
So, 9, in total. You can now use the Fellowship of the Ring made entirely of Gandalf!
Seriously, there are enough, GW. Do something new (and for the love of god, no more Bilbos)
You forgot about gandalf on the cart.....thats the best one entirely.
Yeah, I missed that one on purpose as it's more of a display piece than a gaming peace. But I fully agree, it's an amazing model and one I wish I owned.

It is still for sale and it does have rules. He is counted as being mounted. Very usable

Put these next to the LOTR Men of Gondor or the Rohan models, and yes, they look like fisher price. GW have gone from producing some brilliant models to producing models that look cheap and Vulgar. This upsets me.

No, not seeing any gulf in quality [in fact the moustached face on the above looks worse than Alfred]
Though I get it, a GW realease without a "miniatures look fething gak" comment is the direct equivalent to a jam sandwich without any jam, GW fans just gotta live with that

I like the new models and sculpts actually I would say it is on par and slightly increased quality compared to the older models.
OTHER than Bard...What's up with the shape of his head? That one I don't really like but Gandalf looks great!
Oh and Alfreds fat uni...not sure about that one or why there would be a mini for that haha

Consider the subject matter. Gondor has clean lines and heroic armor. The recently released Mirkwood Ranger kits are brilliant. These are good sculpts of comical characters or characters in somewhat silly uniforms. The only one who doesn't get a pass from me is John Bowman. Er, Bard Cleese. Er, you know what I mean!
