I thinking of getting a tablet for Codexes, army books, etc for both 40K and Warmachine. I would also use it for browsing while watching telly.
But I'm not sure of the various pros and cons. Specifically Android Devices vs iPads.
I love paper books, don't get me wrong but I'm fed up with having a list of typos and errata on day one. With ebooks getting regular updates I think this would be less of an issue.
I read the review of the digital codexes elsewhere on this forum. The iBook version does sound better in terms of content and simple 'out of the box'. Sadly, GW doesn't look to be that interested doing the same with other ebook formats.
(On the other hand I found it a pain to get an eReader for my phone that would read the new SoB codex. No problems on PC...but that's no darned use!)
Another albeit small plus is that I can order it and download straight away. I have No Quarter on electronic subscription now, for example. Although that often needs me to go looking for stuff by that's by the by.
At the moment I am thinking of either getting a cheap and cheerful tablet Hudl or a reconditioned iPad of some description. The latter is more expensive but it seems to be slightly better in terms of what it offers. It also offers a bigger screen than my S4. A 7" tablet really isn't much bigger than what I have.

Have you tried using calibur to convert the SOB codex into a format your ereader will read?

If you can convert it to ePub it will likley read fine. I imagine the problem is more with the file than with the readers.

Android for sure. I use mine for the very reasons you listed. I've a bunch of codices on my SD card and surf for various things as well as streaming Netflix and YouTube to my TV.
Just make sure what ever tablet you get, that it can use the google play stores. That store is the cheese.

I used a (cheap) tablet for a while (until it broke :( ) Got myself a new one over xmas period, paid a bit more to hopefully ensure the durability is a bit better. Personally I think they are a damn useful gaming tool. Mine is currently populated with Aleph Toolbox (an Infinity army builder), all the rules n stuff for infinity (there are a lot of PDFs), a Bushido rulebook, plus anything else I need I can load on to there rather easily. So rather than carrying around a small library's worth of paper, everything fits on a single thing that weighs the same as an average-sized paperback. Only advice I would give is go for a bigger screen, you think 7" is enough, then you look at 10", and you realise how much that extra size does. Or was that the surgery I had done recently?

I'm looking forward to mantics deadzone and Dreadball apps that purple guerilla are making. If they live up to the hype in the demo I saw, they'll be pretty darn brill.
Basically, take your iPad style gw digital rulebooks, add in the X wing squadron builder website and throw in a campaign management system too.

Thank you for the reply.
I had a chance to mess around with an iPad at lunchtime. I seen Android and Windows tablets previously - I don't see much of a benefit for the Apple tax. That and the iBook codex SM is more expensive than the hardcopy.
With regards to screen size I agree that 7" is too small. Not easy on the eyes and not much bigger than my brick of a phone.
A tablet definitely sounds like it would be useful. I will have a look for some Android devices.
Thanks again.
