Im thinking of doing a blog on here with a look back at 2nd ed 40k, covering the models, rules and codices/books.
Is it ok to take pictures of said codex pages and load them here? I.e. showing rules, stats, models etc etc.
I obviously own each of the books and codicies, albeit have no way of proving it bar uploading the pics!
Is that ok via Dakka pic posting rules?

Good question. I posted some on my Twitter, not a whole lot anyone can do about that, my purpose was showing a particular vehicle. I hope they listed it in Escalation for a future plastic. Here on Dakka may be another matter entirely.

I am not any kind of authority, but I have previously asked for, and gotten the OK to, post single pages for the purposes of review previously. I suspect it depends how much of the book you post and how much of a review it is.
If it's in depth enough, you may want to consider hosting the pictures on picasaweb.google.com - while what you propose is clearly fair use, GWS has not previously hesitated to dabble in litigation even when they had no right to under the law, and even though Dakkadakka.com is registered in California, which has strong anti-SLAPP laws - who wants the hassle?

Thank you Ouze, as always
I will not post until, Lego or Yakky give it the ok.
But you are right, I am loathe for the GW LT to C&D here for the sake of a few pics. However I hope, we (and they - GW LT) can avoid that!

Generally it's ok, so long as you don't get too carried away with it, and the pictures aren't hosted in the Dakka Gallery.

A bit off topic but I think it is good to ask because the guestion does not deserve an own topic. Is it in general safe to upload pictures of your own miniatures taken by yourself to dakka because I have heard that you can track the image to where it has been taken?

That info is usually in the exif data of a picture, which I think is utilized by the gallery. If you look at pictures you will see exposure settings for the picture, and the location info would be located in the same area of data.
You can manually strip exif data, but if you are really concerned about it then your phone should have an option to turn location data off for your camera.

Small snippets of out of print stuff is fine provided it is clearly labelled in the thread and gallery as being copyright GW and their property.
Full pages are a bit too far in most cases, especially from codexes. If they have been out of print for a long time then hosting those images elsewhere and reviewing them here is fine with us. We will take it down if asked to but wont actively take it down ourselves.
Here's one example of the limits of what is tolerable:

To expand on what Lego said, if GW asks us to remove images, we will do so, and certainly whole page scans are the type of thing that will raise their ire should anyone notify them about it.
Even if you do host only snippits of a scanned page here on Dakka, make sure you tag those images in the gallery as 'copyright GW' so we can easily remove them if requested.
Hosting the images on another site absolves us of having to remove the images should GW complain, but it still may happen if GW finds out about them and has an issue with you using them...they'll just have to contact whatever site you're using to host the pics instead of us.

Lego, that article, and the thread that spawned it (linked to at the end of the article) is absolutely awesome. Dakka was a smaller place then, it seems, and Mannahnin was both posting regularly and hilarious. Lots of names still quite active from it, too. Nice.
Link to the thread in question for a trip down reminiscence lane:

On a semi related note. Would I be in the same boat as Ratius if I put up photos of the DIY terrain pages from one of the 40k BRBs?

Yeah I am expecting it to be a big resounding no. But I thought it'd at least make sure 100% before hand though.

Again, if the point of this exercise is to show something that is in GW's rulebook and then explain how, like you're going to build something similar, then taking an excerpt from a larger picture in the rulebook (zoomed in on the terrain piece in question), will likely not be an issue.
When you start to post entire page scans, then that is a giant red flag.
WITH THAT SAID, even if you do post a small excerpt from a rulebook pic, if GW were (however unlikely) contact me to have it removed, I would almost certainly do so, whether it is actually fair use or not.
So best advice is to:
crop the scan/pic so that you're only showing the actual object in the picture that you're referring to, and host it on your own pic hosting site and then link to it here on Dakka.
If you don't have such a hosting service, then you can use our gallery, but please tag the pic as 'copyright GW' if you do.

Thanks for that Yakface.
I'm going to err on the side of caution here and not post them as I was thinking maybe the full page would be more useful then the portion-of-a-page. And you know... I'd rather not get you into any sort of legal strife if I can help it.
