Ok, so I decided to go with necrons for 6th. I'm starting all over from scratch after having played a massive guard army for years. I feel it's time to change it up. I've been doing some lurking about my local store, and on the interwebs, and have some fine tuning questions to ask.

first of all, i have to get the codex, but i know enough about the army to be coherent when i talk about them, and what i want. what i don't know is all the dirty little tricks and tactics that come with starting a new necron army. that's where you come in (hopefully). i have a couple of successful necron players at my store that i've been talking to, and have a general idea of the style army i'm looking at. i just don't know where everything fits exactly on the FOC, or points values. however i plan to build an army large enough to use for apocalypse as well as regular games. i'm diggin the tesseract by the way.

here are my questions:
1. what is this i hear about "royal court"? i assume it's a style of army list. i think it's along the lines of a type of unit you can spread into other units to beef them up, and spread killpoints. i know of a similar sounding trick a space wolf player used on me a while ago. sounds tasty. i forget the exact names of the unit.

2. i wish to incorporate flyers. i heard about flyer spam. I do not intend to spam horribly, but i like the models, and flyers. and i like winning. I plan to have a few as transports to drop some heavier infantry in,(instead of using them as gunships). in addition the transports for the warriors, i figure any mobilityi can add without a monolith can only help.

3. i heard having a unit of about 6 wraiths is nasty in hth. me likey.

4. I heard you don't really need a character. i don't mind having a foot lord, or destroyer lord. question is, what to stick him with. i heard something about mindlink scarabs? as far as the named characters, can i get a little info to make an informed decision?

5. i don't really plan to use use the monolith. i have it on good word that the other version of the command barge x3 is a great heavy idea.

6. what mixture of warriors/ vehicles, etc. is advantageous? obviously phase out is a problem with the army. how much squishy warriorness should i expect to use?

7. since most all games now seem to be objective based i'd like to know what tactics you would advice to utilize or avoid with the new necrons in 6th. i'd like to stay away from developing bad habits.

8. what armaments should i utilize with the basic troops to make them viable? i heard some scuttlebutt about a few options i havent heard of before.

that's most of what i can think of for now, and until i get the codex (which will be in the next week or so), i'm relying on you and other word of mouth to orient myself. I know i'm really picking some brains here, but informed decisions are good ones right?

First of all - This:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/480149.page

1. The Royal Court is a Unit - You can have one for every Overlord in your army. The unit can consist of Lords and Crypteks. Lords are downgraded Overlords and a lot cheaper, but have a lot of the same equipment options. The crypteks are the crazy scientists of your army, able to purchase game style defining equipment.

Every model in the Royal Court is a Character and can be assigned to a squad before the startof the game. For each Royal Court only one member can be assigned to a squad.

2. IMO the Night Scythe is still one of the best flyers in the game. Can transport 15 models and savely drop them off without going into hover. Also the TL tesla destructor adds solid firepower to your army

3. Wraiths are jumpinfantry with a nasty 3++ so usually the live long enough to reach their target and shred it to pieces (with rending).

4. Overlords can choose a lot of nice but expensive equipment. Mindshackle Scarabs is one of them. Forces a model in base contact with your Overlord to make a moral test with 3d6. Failure means he hits himself or his unit.
No you don't need a named character but they can add a lot to your army.
For example: Nemesor Zandrek and Vargard Obyron.
Obyron is Zandrekhs Bodyguard and can teleport himself and his unit within 6'' of Zandrekh without scattering.

5. The Annihilation Barge, equiped with a TL Tesla destructor like the Night Scythe, adds a ton of firepower to your list and indeed is cheap enough to spam it.

6. Phase Out is a thing of the past. Doesn't exist in the current codex.

7. Necrons can be masters of the movement phase. Either you teleport your units across the field or transport them in nightscythes or ghost arks. But they are also durable enough to just stand on an objective and take a beating.

8. Warriors are equiped with the gauss flayer(a bolter with the gauss special rule). They can't take anything else and they don't have to.

I would like to recommend the Necron Battleforce. 20 Warriors is always a good start.
Also you have 5 Deathmarks/Immortals in the box. Add a Nightscythe and a Cryptek and you can build one of the cheaper deathstars.
Deathmarks mark a target when they deploy and wound that target on a 2+. This also applys to any character that joins their unit. A Cryptek upgraded to a harbinger of despair has a nasty ap2 flamer.

Don't take Flayed ones and you're good to go. Most things in the army are awesome so its hard to go wrong. You have no weakeness to speak of to really be weary of. Just get which units you think are cool and have fun.

Exactly.
Necrons have a huge variety of different units with a lot of synergy between them.
for example: Destroyer Lords with Wraiths or Triarch Stalker with everything else.

Thanks guys. I'm getting the book a couple weeks from now, but it sounds like i've made a good choice. the last time i ran necrons they were super slow. (3rd edition). with all the new toys they get, i'm a happy gamer. lol.

Wreaths are broken 3++ no terrain tests jump infantry coils and 3 attacks. Throw a d Lord for hatred everything. Squad of 5. 20 attacks On charge at higher initiative 're rolling 1's rending On 6's

Throw 'em in a night scythe for strategic insertion

First off, you should probably proofread your comments before you post them.
Secondly, you don't put them in a Nightscythe for the same reason you don't deep strike them: they won't be able to assault the same turn they disembark.
They're jump infantry, they should be able to get into combat by turn 2 if you move them properly. That's the soonest they'd be able to get in if coming on from reserves, so Nightscythe/deep strike won't make it any faster.

Skoffs is right.
I usually run them as a squad of 6, with or without a D-Lord.
3 Whip-Coils almost guarantees that any dangerous damage output the enemy unit may have possessed will be reduced before they hit you.
And even then, with a 3++ ,they survive very very long.

Their only weakness is their T4, but for what they cost, wraiths are a very good unit in the codex.

Skoffs, Sorry spelling nazi I made a mistake, I'm not a 'cron so I'm not perfect.

I believe I said strategic insertion.
Dropping them from a scythe is quite fun and works well for myself, Drop wraiths, hide wraiths wait for next turn. Especially if they are hiding a deathstar unit away that the wraiths will eat. With the scythes tesla you have fire support.

This doesn't make much sense to me as a tactic either. If you are "inserting" them they can't attack. And you can't take a night scythe as dedicated transport with them. So they can, at BEST case: embark a transport turn 2, disembark it turn 3, assault turn 4. They could have travelled 48" by then plus run moves. I don't get it.

Deep striking a squad doesn't even make much sense to me to be honest. But it would probably be better than this.

I usually start mine on the deployment line and get in the run position. Depending on opponent.

Build a Bakery! Lots of Flyer spam (If you're a Jag(Jerk)) If not then I hear some Necron Warriors a Monolith and a Necron Overlord with some royal court options is a good start.

The only way to "strategically insert" a squad via Nightscythe is if they're going to do something the turn they set foot on the table (eg. shoot at something, capture an objective, etc.).
As Kholzerino outlined above, doing this with Wraiths is a horrible waste of time at best.
TL;DR- if you're using Wraiths, just run them up the table. Use your Nightscythes to transport things that will actually benefit from them (eg. Troops, Deathmarks, etc.)
