Hi everyone

I'm a relatively new player, and play with my friends who are all 5 - 6 year vets of the game, with well rounded armies and good play styles. We play a lot of 1000 point games to keep the time down so i'm trying to write a 1000 point list which isn't going to keep getting completely destroyed!

This is what I was thinking of at the moment, with the fists chapters. Any and all feedback will be great!.

HQ - Librarian level 2 - 90 points

TROOPS

Tactical Squad - Veteran sergeant with power fist - (Rhino 35 points dedicated transport) - 205 points
Tactical Squad - Veteran sergeant with power fist - (Rhino 35 points dedicated transport) - 205 points

ELITES

10 sternguard veterans - 10 storm bolters - 280 points

Heavy support

Hunter - 70 points
Predator - TL laser cannon, 2 side sponson laser cannons - 140 points

Total: 990 points.

Thanks everyone!

I'm a new guy myself, but what stands out to me:
- 10 Storm bolters on the sternguard is a waste -- you can't use Special-Issue Ammunition with them. As I see it, the value of Sternguard mainly comes from just that as well the ability to take a bunch of combi-weapons(which that squad also lacks).
- You have no means of delivering the sternguard vets(plus Librarian?) where they need to be.

Seemingly the configuration of your tac squads could be adjusted, too. You have them configured I guess to either just shoot their bolters or get in close and have the sarge pop something with his power fist, but either use seems sub-optimal. Maybe drop the power fist and vet sarge upgrade for a melta gun + combi-melta(or plasma, if you end up re-configuring to have more dependable anti-armor elsewhere) and use the spare points somewhere else.

Remove the points of individual upgrades (i.e. rhino transport) you can get in big doodoo for that.

Do you just want a good list for 1k points? Or do you have some models and you're using what youve got? It's gonna affect alot of the advice you get.

Yeah, I agree with removing the storm bolters and trying to add in a delivery system on the vets. I would suggest a drop pod for them.

Do you have a lot of flyers in your gaming group? If so the hunter is a good idea, but if it seems like there aren't quite so many at 1000 points, you may want to drop that one and get yourself a small unit to put the Librarian with in a rhino or razorback.

And if you are tight for points, you may want to substitute the powerfists for power weapons on the Tac squads.

I don't see a lot of Imperial Fist to this list tbh.

Drop the Stormbolters on the sternguard. Entirely useless as pointed out. Use combi's instead and get them into some sort of transport (drop pods are popular as suicide squads). A good concept is 10 (2 heavy flamer, 3-4 combi melta, drop pod), combat squaded (flamers in one squad, melta in another) which you drop behind the enemy to hit 2 targets (one tank, one infantry with the flamers).

Drop the vet sgt upgrades and power fists. Your tac squads don't want to be in combat, and if they are your sgt will likely be dead before he can hit with an Initiative 1 power fist. use those points to add a special weapon for the squad instead.

Hunter - Ok, if you're seeing fliers. ADL with Quad Gun would be better.

Predator - I prefer Las-sponsons and TL Autocannon turret, but Las/Las is good too.

Using your list as a base I'd probably look closer to something like this (but what you play against could make a HUGE difference too);

Chapter Tactics : Iron Hands (or maybe salamanders)
Librarian (ML 2)
Tac Squad (10, Melta gun, Rhino)
Tac Squad (10, Melta gun, Rhino)
Sternguard (10, 2 x heavy flamer, 3 x combi melta, drop pod)
Predator (TL AC/Las sponson)
ADL with Quad Gun

I'd also consider swapping the Librarian for a Captain, but that's just because I always forget to use the libby's powers personally lol.
