Heroic Senior Officer

So i read a lot of history books and the other night i was thinking, is there any detailed fluff covering a battle or war. For example i can read a hisory book (older ones are normally better) and it will have a wealth of information regarding the men in command, the equipment used and in what numbers and well everything.
So my question, are there any really detailed stories or fluff of a battle in the 40k universe?
If it involves the imperial guard, naval battles and detailed accounts i will be very happy. Im kind of sick of GW putting up tiny snipets of useless information regarding battles in the imperial guard codices. I want something with more depth.

Look up the World Engine. It has Space Marines (big shock!) but personally, it's my favorite battle in the fluff.
Hope you enjoy it too!

Siege of Vraks is a pretty good story that reads like a historical account.

The 5th edition Space Marine codex has a page and a bit on the battle. I tried to find a link with enough detail but couldn't find one. Sorry.

Sounds like you want to pick up some of the Imperial Armour books.
I reccomend The Taros Campaign, Raid on Kastorel Novem and Fall of Orpheus.
The Anphelion Project has some really nice background writing, too, but it's more about the characters of the Inquisitor and Major Durra and less about the details of the battles.

+1 for Siege of Vraks. Things get a turn for the worse from the second book onwards when Daemons and Grey Knights make an appearance, but the first book reads like an Osprey Publishing book from the 41st millenium.
The Badab War 1 and 2 and the Horus Heresy books are also written as in-universe historical tomes. The focus is on Space Marines so some crazy antics are to be expected, but at least the writers put some effort in making the story and military manoeuvers slightly believable.

QFT The first Siege of Vraks book is excellent. Apart from IA, there are also detailed battle stories in some of the BL books.

Check out Let the Galaxy Burn. (Not the novel, the short story collection edited by Marc Gascoigne and Christian Dunn.) Several of the authors featured in there are into more of the hardboiled military fiction you are interested in. That would be a good way to figure out which writers are producing the sorts of things you're looking for.

The Imperial Armor books have the best military fluff in 40K.
Siege of Vraks and the Taros Campaign are both great reads.

Alright ill try the imperial armour books. Unfortunately i cant read books that are like stories (its a pain, because i cant watch movies etc) because i dont get into them. So the more like a non fiction book the better. So imperial armour seems to be bang on what i might be after. So ill get the IA books every few months and chew my way through them.
Thanks heaps guys. Oh and skavenlord, i read a summery of the battle you suggested and it did sound pretty epic
