I'm joining a 40k league tomorrow and the first month is a 500 point list, I know I'm against Orks tomorrow but there are 'Nids, Eldar, Tau, vanilla marines etc

For my first game I'm thinking either

librarian + jump pack
10 x assault marines (with flamers)

10 x tactical marines+ upgrades, should be about 500 points

but I'd love to be more assault orientated, has anyone got any ideas?

I'd love Gabriel Seth with the tactical marines, either in a drop pod, or razorback, maybe

Well the first idea is that Assault Marines will suit BA better. Of course, twenty of them won't be possible with 500p.

In 500 point I like squads of five Assault Marines in Razorbacks. Leaves enough points to get an extra toy also.

Ball Pred - hvy bolter sponsons

Exactly 500. That's about as good as it comes. Only issue is no AA...

How come you'd use the axe over the sword?

Mostly for the ability to wreck 2+ in challenges. And when combined with FC, you get S6 on charge.

Not sure which list you were referring to, but DC Dreadnought is a Troops choice. You can field one for every 5 DC's.
No scoring but one charge will be the end of your enemy.

On the razorback list, what weapons do they have?

I prefer the axe to other PW for the AP2 and extra strength, admittedly there is the Init drawback and only if I know I'm against a high Init army w plenty of 3+ will I take a sword - for 2+ you need the axe and for < 3+ you may as we'll take the power maul...

Bear in mind mind with the DC list there are no scoring and tabling the opponent is really only viable if they bring a non-shooty list with less than 2 vehicles... and no fliers. Literally the only thing that can even attempt fliers is the DC bolters, but then you'll be wanting pistols anyway. Have fun with that. Also you only anti-tank is the dread so if that dies... Or gets stuck in combat (which it quite well might)...

I tabled the guy I was playing granted, it was down to lucky dice rolls but it worked. Only two more games at 500 points and it's onto a 1000

Oh don't worry about flyers. If anyone is daft enough to bring a flyer at 500pts you will table them!

Granted. Full DC-lists always struggle on these things. However, at 500 points you are less likely to see these things. Biggest issue is low model count.

This... Is actually pretty valid for 500 points. I'd change Lance for Shield of Sanguinius as that allows you to play two powers each turn and buffs the ASM survability a lot.

Yeh shield is a better shout! I included lance for a bit more AT, which isn't too needed at 500pts.

It is if you play against my lists
Nearly all my 500pt lists have 3 vehicles minimum.
EDIT: except CSM... I can't get a decent list out of them. At the moment it's a helturkey plus minimum marines w lord or sorcerer and minimum shooty cultists (which tbh really isn't that great)

Not saying that Shield is always better than Lance.
In that list, you just have to choose between flying 12" or shooting the Lance.

I played against against Orks, they were nobz, about 20 of them. I managed to table him, the death company are beasts! The dice gods were on my side though aha

I always run my DC with bolters. They are relentless so you can still rapid fire before a charge.

When the points get higher try a furioso in a drop pod with a frag cannon. I think it's the best unit in the codex.

That will mean 165pts (almost 1/3 of the points) off the board. Unless you walk the warriors, but then you are giving up on the biggest advantage of the scythe by using it solely as a gun boat, especially when the anni barge can do it better from turn 1 for cheaper.
This means you only have the immortals and the overlord who will be swept by the assault squads whilst their sargeant/s heroically distracts the warscythe wielding maniac, making that res orb useless.

They'd probably beat me. I can't beat Necrons for some reasons. I did play against someone at 800 points in the early stages of the last league and faced a monolith and a flyer...

Great to hear! To be honest, I made a similar lost a while ago but haven't fielded it since I've never heard of a succesful full-DC list
I guess I'll give it a go some day, but remember that against shooty lists this will struggle.

Agreed 2 a barges would work better due to av13

But scythe gun boat plus 10 rapid fire gauss will eat most of a 10 man squad in a turn.

I wouldn't use that list in 500
Don't wanna be a waac.

My flyer spam list only comes out at tourney or by request.

It was the most enjoyable 40k game I've played for a while, I don't usually get many games in, being honest but yeh, it was fun. I think that was down to the units, I don't think Death company troops are scoring so it forces your hand in how to play - death or glory.

So don't expect to win many haha

I did play DA last league and I got bored, as you said, everyone played Dark Vengeance based armies I found

I got gk and necrons. Not cos I'm tfg but at my local gw no one played them. So sick of dark vengeance armies and chaos.

Blood angels hmmm might go look at their codex.

I play Blood Angels and you will have your back to the wall compared to most codexes. Others have more fire power and more units. Really the only thing you have is maneuverability. So try to find a weak flank, swarm to it, and fold their army. I tend to have a small detachment on the field in the beginning and use lots of drop pods and stormravens. Win or lose my turn two is always entertaining.
