So I have this unopened box of Space Marine terminators, but having visited the local GW recently I noticed that the "current" terminator box has different artwork.

I was thinking of returning them and exchanging them for a Stormtalon box (and pay the small surcharge) as this has been possible in the past at my local GW (exchanged a Tau Piranha for a SM Drop pod) but, given the new box artwork, my "old" termie box would look out of place in their shelves with the "new" termies.

Does anyone have experience in these matters? How forthcoming are GW stores?

I don't think that they'll do that.
It's an older box and isn't wrapped in it's plastic anymore.
Plus when they do swap, you'd need the receipt.

Poor ignorant guardsmen, it be but one of many of the great miracles of the Emperor! The Emperor is magic, like Harry Potter, but more magic! A most real and true SPACE WIZARD! And for the last time... I'm not a space plumber.

Still wrapped in plastic, the flash causes the confusion (see top of box)

Never had a problem exchanging stuff for store credit, done it a number of times including swapping 4 used but current Codexes and an army book for some Space Marine bikes. Given the way GW operates its stores I doubt this was due to the manager just being a good bloke but as always YMMV; the worst they can do is say no in any case, so you have little to lose by asking.

i would say they probably wont without a receipt.
Otherwise people could buy stuff discounted online and then go to the store to return it for full price.

To exchange at a GW without a receipt, the item must be sealed in box, and current range.

That was my experience, and I've done it many times, usually as a result of mis-gifts from friends/family.

Well according to my store it have to be the current box (also cover) Due Codes. + plastic wrapping, i can see you got it, but that Code wont work as it's a old one sadly. I love GW's policy on their stuff tough, i can go buy stuff on discount somewhere and return it in the store for full price, it's a inreal life hack!

Does anyone know how old the current terminator box art is?

I got the above box YEARS ago (2006 I think) so did I miss my chance just by a few months, or has the current look of the termie box been here for a couple years?

The stores in my area USED to do exchanges for stuff that was still shrink wrapped, and it was a great service.

However, recently they got a new register system that made the process more challanging to add items to inventory.

They are trying to find a way around it, as honestly they feel its a good service, and know that for some players we would buy more stuff knowing we could return the stuff we don't use.

For example, when nids dropped...I was not going to buy ANYTHING until reading the book...as I didn't want to get stuck with extra models as I did with my DA (wanna buy a da flyer? cheap?).

So, as far as stores being able to take exchanges....ask them.
