(CNN) -- Police in Northern California have arrested an elementary schoolteacher after she allegedly brought marijuana-laced food to an after-hours employee potluck dinner.
Teresa Gilmete Badger, a 47-year-old teacher at Matthew Turner Elementary School in Benicia, was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of poisoning after a six-week-long investigation, said Lt. Frank Hartig of the Benicia Police Department.
After the late-November get-together in the Bay Area town, several people reported feeling ill, a police statement said.
"One of the partygoers was rushed to the hospital with severe reactions; she was hospitalized," Hartig told CNN affiliate KPIX. "The very next morning, another partygoer was taken to the hospital, because she continued to feel like she was under the influence of something."
At least one of the women tested positive for THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the principal intoxicant in marijuana, police said.
A 15-year-old also got sick after someone at the party brought leftovers home, according to police.
During their investigation, police said they were told that Badger had "allegedly confessed her involvement to individuals who were also in attendance at the party."
She was arrested Friday and booked into Solano County Jail in Fairfield. Bail was set at $15,000.
Badger chose not to speak to arresting officers, Hartig said.
Did she not understand what potluck is?

I don't think I've ever heard of a pot brownie making someone sick before. That sounds mighty suspicious.

I've, ahem, heard of people getting so high they throw up. Usually there's other chemicals involved in the process.
Any effect the day after sounds like utter bull gak, however.

Everyone brings in a food of their choice. You split it amongst participants.
At work we usually have one once every 3 months or so. I usually do bratwurst crockpotted in beer.

By the sounds of it, you're either lucky with your pot, or you're unlucky with it.

I think that's more of a meth problem rather than marijuana.

Ah.
Interesting side story: I noticed that people tended to get massive stomach aches after our family reunions. After a year or so, I ruled it out to be the potato salad. Being someone who holds mayonnaise as suspect in any circumstance, I never got sick. After expressing the theory to my immediate family, they never suffered the same affliction.
I don't think that bad cooking would ever result in the presence of THC in food.

I heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed, life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears."But doctor" He says, "I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

I've definitely heard of pot making people sick before. They could also be allergic to it potentially. Anything that alters your body chemistry can make you sick, especially if its something you've never had before as well.

Also depends on what sort of weed we're dealing with,. Plain pot that grows in someone's back yard? Unlikely. Thai Stick? Much more likely.

As stated, I've known people to throw up on it before. A day later seems odd. It has an unusual effect on me, but I've got a biochemistry that people might describe as being somewhat unstable.

It could take a while for it to work its way through the system. Or maybe the sickness was caused by withdrawal.
Does the metabolism of pot create toxins like alcohol does? If so that could explain it.

Surprisingly, no. Cannabis sativa has the lovely traits of being both fast acting when initially exposed, and taking a very long time to work it's way out of the body. Addiction to it is primarily psychological, rather than chemical. Unlike booze and some other drugs, there's no harsh 'crash' afterwards, and it's actually impossible to fatally overdose on weed.
If it was in fact, just plain weed, what we're most likely seeing here is actually one of it's more charming side effects, increased anxiety. More likely though, this is a drug interaction. It does not state if the people ill were taking, for example, prescription meds for depression, etc. However, I suspect that this may have been weed with additional additives, many of the most common (including heroin) would cause this sort of reaction.

That's interesting. I've known it to be remarkable for reducing anxiety. I know people who take it specifically because of anxiety issues.

It often does reduce anxiety.
It can, however, induce paranoia, which I've always seen manifest as a fixation on a single anxious train of thought. ("My neighbor narced me out to the cops. Maybe the pizza dealer is an undercover cop. Maybe my dealer flipped on me. No, I'm not going to answer the phone, it might be bugged." etc, etc.)
