As it states on top, do you really need the baron for the seer council? Could you take a tau commander with hit and run
while in addition getting some other cool abilities?
I do not have the Tau codex and that's my main reason for asking
thank you for any and all comments.

barom and council are jump/bike infintry so they move at the same.
Crisis suits are jet pack which move at 6 inches in move phase.
so up to you but i would want to loose the mobility.
hope that helps =)

The baron is essential.
He provides a 2++ invulnerable save for the fortune reroll.
The unit can achieve a 2+ rerollable cover save, but lots of things ignore cover.

Not to mention the Baron gives you +1 on the roll to pick table sides (and, thus, go first). That is pretty damn great.
...That being said the Seer Council doesn't *need* him--you can make a decently frightening council with just the Eldar book.
...but he helps. A lot.

Baron's reroll on H&R is surprisingly useful and the grisly trophies on the venoms are likely better than anything Tau would bring to the Jetseer list

You are completely incorrect I'm afraid.
Just because you do not like new(er) fluff, does not mean that what you think used to be the case should be applied ad nauseam to the background.
Eldar and Dark Eldar like each other now, deal with it. #Eldar4Lyfe.

thanks for your comments, I asked because I already have some tau models and no DE so i'll have to pick them up.
Also how does the baron get them a 2++? And does the baron's combat drugs affect his unit?

The baron has wargear (shadow field) that provides him a 2++

it also applies to the unit he is attached to. the DE codex was designed for him to join other flying skateboard dark eldar and nothing else. Since they didnt put that caviot in there though, that allowed him to join other units through RAW and battle brothers further broke it.
To the OP, they dont have to have him but in a non-friendly competitive setting, they would be fools to not invite him along.

I have my Dark Eldar codex right here and according to it the Baron has no combat drugs, sadly. :(

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but it seems like your saying that the shadow field gives the 2++ to the whole unit. I assure you it does not. It gives the bearer a 2++ which he loses is he fails a save.

The Stealth that he gts goes to the entire unit he is attached to. this stacks with the shrowd (or is it the other way around/ Doesnt mater) to give the unit the 2+ cover save that can be further boosted to be rerollable by the farseer. It does not apply just to him, it specifically states that this ability encompasses the entire unit.
His personal save like a shadow field is an altogether different save that he personally can choose to take if he so wishes. THAT would only apply to him but that is not the save ware discussing as we are discussing his boost to the entire unit.

Yes, stealth is given to the unit, but the post of mine you quoted was about the shadow field.
Arbiter asked how baron gets the 2++ invulnerable, and I informed him it was the shadow field.
Stealth wasnt mentioned at all. That's why your reply to my post makes no sense and left me confused.

Combat drugs are on page 25 of the DE codex.
It tells you exactly who it affects.

Stealth and the buffs given by the farseer, seers themselves make them have a 2+ rerollable cover save. With this, the entire unit gets the 2= cover save rather than just the baron. having played against it, i can say that hoping they roll snakeyes on a save is not worth hanging your hat on. So yes, the baron DOES make the unit more survivable. I wouldnt do it in friendly games as it could cause you to get less of them but in a tourney yes, take him along.
his personal wargear save is irrelevent (except for shots that he is unable to pass off that ignore cover. As a matter of fact, I would always take te cover save instead on the off chance of failing one as a fail wouldnt cause the cover save to sputter and die as it would his personal field. save that for the ignores cover shots. as it only affects him, it is not part of what the thread is about. His stealth is relevent though.

Aww, it's cute how not in line with the current fluff this is, it's like reading a history book, have you read the Eldar Path series ( DE and/or CWE ones) or even the current codex's, it seems like you haven't
Anyway of course the Baron isn't needed, but i can't see a reason not to have him. He grants lots of the stuff the council NEEDS to make itself a much better deathstar such as hit'n'run so you can't get tarpitted as well as stealth to go with your shrouded from conceal and Assault grenades to stop you failed when you charge into cover. The other stuff is extra, like putting him in the front to tank all flamer wounds or something but this is just a bonus, you buy him for the bonuses, the fact you get an ok character with it is just a coincidence!
