Hey guys! So I saw this guy on deviantart(Protieus) who made a rebel grots "counts as" imperial gaurd army and I thought the idea could be put in all the armies, so here is my list:
Imperial gaurd=rebel grots
tyranids=dred mob
tau=bad moons?
dark eldar=freebootas
eldar=I haven't figured anything out yet
Space marines=deff skullz
Chaos space marines= goffs
Chaos daemons= feral orks
greyknights= Tuska's boyz(read fluff about tuska da daemon killa)
Necrons=Tinboyz
So what do you think about these? Pic will be up for the grots.

The thing with count's as armies is that they have to be done right.
The miniatures you have need to be almost instantly (or on explanation) noticed as the minis that you are tying to portray.

Imperial gaurd=rebel grots
-Easily done!

Tyranids=dred mob
- This will be a bit harder to do right... Synapse creatures and all! Also the Hive mind thing wold be an issue here maybe.
Also how will Carnifexes and Hive Tyrants be done?

How I would go about it...
Fluffwise you could have a Ork warlord that finds a mind kontrol device that helps him have absolute control over his slave like army.

Monstrous creatures can be the actual Tyranid minis they represent piloted by Orks.
like this...

A lot of Tyranid carapace and claws would have to be attached to the Orks.

Also in line with the mind kontrol fluff each Ork has a interceptor device on their heads to receive the signals the warlord is giving them.

tau=bad moons?
- Could be done easily enough. Just all the Tau stuff looted by Orks.
Just search looted Tau.

dark eldar=freebootas
Again Looted DE stuff. But I like the Freebootas Idea! Pirates on the DE ships!

eldar=I haven't figured anything out yet
Again just looted Eldar stuff possibly also with a Freebootas theme.

Space marines=deff skullz
Could be done... Would be hard to make look good though.

Chaos space marines= goffs
Same as space marines

Chaos daemons= feral orks
Tainted by chaos, very possible. Orky daemons and all... very interesting.

greyknights= Tuska's boyz(read fluff about tuska da daemon killa)
Very possible, you'll just need a lot of armour. Possibly OTT.

Necrons=Tinboyz
Pretty possible, just looted Necron stuff.

Just google if anyone has done any of this before you may get some ideas.

In order to get good looking Ork counts as minis, I think seamlessly and subtly integrating bits from both Orks and the range that you are trying to copy will go a long way.
Notice how Proiteus makes his minis look as if they were sculpted that way. How the bits from both ranges fit together so well they seem to belong together.

If you ever actually model any of these armies you'd do well to remember that.

Counts as armies usually have a lot more character than other armies and as a result tend to stand out!

I am not looting anything except for deffskullz. I want a look that would really show that the orks built it and not looted it. For example my nid dread mob is literally deff dreads with counts as stats and my grot rebels just have looted ork vehicles.

So not really anything but using orks as another army. That will be a tough sell to anyone. Protieus actually put alot of effort into converting his models. They counts as imperial guard as their are no full on grot armies. Using models to "count as" another is just proxying.

I was willing to scratch build them and customise.

If you put a ton of time into each and every individual model making it look like what its supposed to be but still with an ork-esque feel, go for it and good luck. But what you are just trying to use one army as many, and come up with reasoning behind it.

Yeah, Im not seeing it. Scratch building things in the end will look like orks. Killa cans will look like killa cans not look like Tyranids.

He might just like the Tyranid rules and want to play his orks that way. I personally see nothing wrong with this. I have some models in my Tyranid army, half of which are counts as proxy models because I wanted a heavy Genestealer cult/Renegade Space Marine theme. I even write on the bases what the model is supposed to be so there is no confusion with my opponent. As long who you are playing against has no problem with it, I say run with it.

Since I'd never play loyalists (cept maybe Wolves) I have a few models I'm working on for a Deffwotch themed army.

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

Of course it only matters if your friends are okay with it. You could use candy and soda cans if you wanted to play with your friends and they didnt care. Having to explain every unit to someone sounds tedious to me. But having killa cans be big bugs just sounds like you want a cheap way to have another army. As people have suggested converting models to look looted actually would take alot of effort and look good, but thats not what you are trying for. Im all about conversions but proxying models is not the same.

This is nothing like what Protieus did. All of his armies are heavily converted and you can easily tell what they are because they are not anything like another unit. His grots make perfect guardsmen because he armed them to be guardsmen. His dark mechanicus army are almost fully converted models that don't look like another army so people would not mistake them as such.

What you are suggesting is building a killa kan and saying this is my carnifex. Not the same.

I would still play against it. Because I like playing but I would offer the same advice to anyone in person about converting. If you have to explain what everything is its not really worth it.

How about these for 'counts as'?
