So I was thinking of using a dreadnaught for a game I have on monday. I have 145 points to spend. I can also give it a drop pod.
I was thinking.
Ironclad dreadnaught with 1 hunter killer missle. In a pod.
I am using it as a second unit that is good for assault and survivability. However, I have never feilded one so thoughts?

What army are you playing? Dreadnoughts of varying kinds can be found in quite a few different codices.
Also tell us what the rest of your list looks like, then we can better advise.

Sorry. As soon as I sent that, I realized I should fill in the blanks a bit.
I am NOT set on the Dread. I am also playing around with making a cut or two and getting Tigerious and using the scout squad as ultra marines.
Imperial Fists. 2000 points.
Chapter master, art armor, Sheild Eternal, thunder hammer
Chaplain combi flamer
Honor guard x8 1 with regular chapter banner in pod with hq's
Scout x5
Tac squad x10, melta, multi melta, melta bomb, pod
Tac x10 Heavy bolter Pod
Sternguard x5, heavy flamer Razorback
Storm talon tl las
devx10 4 las cannon, Rhino
devx5 4 ml
TFC.
I am going against a SW/BA army, lots of plas in a fortress of redemtion. The idea is to drop the Chapter Master and his pod on one side of the feild, the either Melta squad or something else on the otherside. Both SHOULD be priority targets. One cause it can eat the fortress, the other cause of its cc potential. Either way, something is gonna hit hard.

Overall most dreads are not good picks this edition. They are not too durable and don't bring much that the rest of your list would already bring. If you are picking them from the SM codex then I would advise against it from a competitive point of view.
If you are allowed to use forgeworld however then there are some decent picks. The mortis dread with 2 heavy weapons and skyfire might be useful (im not sure how many a normal sm chapter can have, I think 0-1).
Another alternative would be the mortis contemptor with kheres assault cannons and a missile launcher. This thing serves as a counter to most things in the game. Lots of str 6 firepower with rending and skyfire.

So what about droping the chapter banner on the honorguard squad and using the 145 points to add in Tiggy as an allied detatchment to sit with my las devs?

Tiggy can be very useful, especially with devs. Giving them prescience and/or ignoring the enemies cover can really make a difference.
Tbh the points would b better spent on him than a dread.

Ok. Then thats what I shall try. I havent ever used a physker, so I am a bit afraid of it, but the game is gonna be a fairly laid back one so I should do ok

I love my Dreads. I use two. One in a drop pod and one in backfield with 48" weapons. Given, I've only played two games with them. But still, I like them.

As someone who plays daemons a little advice: positioning is key with psychic powers.
Just remember that buffs/ maledictions must be activated at the start of your movement phase.
And that the shooting ones are of course done in your shooting phase.
This is important, because there is no way to move your psyker, and then buff a unit, they have to be in range at the very start of your movement phase.
Other than that, Tigg is a good psyker to learn to play with. Divination is considered by many to be the best psychic table.

Dreds can always find a way into a list imo. They can take on what ever role you want them to take.

I've found an ironclad drop in the backfield is a great diversion.
It either forces them to divert resources away from your main force, or it wrecks havoc. Plus it's still a pretty good tarp it against fearless units and the like. I've had mine tie up 3 nurgle spawn units and win me a game.

Ironclad w/ Melta and Heavy Flamer in a Pod is 145 Points that can be annoying.

I second the FW Mrk V Mortis Dread with dual TLACs, it typically replaces the ADL/quad-gun for me and is more flexible while filling in the same role if needed (Skyfire/Interceptor)

I agree
I used to love dreads & run at lease 2 or 3 of them every game but with hull pts they just cant take the damaged anymore

my BA list is focused on an heavy alpha strike, and 2x Furioso Fragnaught in pod play a very important role: they alpha strike on most ligh infantry, and AV3 so close to enemy lines force enemy to split attacks away from other sensible unit in the list (like Mephiston or razorback)
i'm planning on using also a Furioso Librarian, both as an escort for jump pack priest'ed unit, or to walk alongside light armoured vehicle to shield them with SoS, but really never wrote down a good list for him.
i'm also planning a full dreadnaught for fun list, you know with 5+ dreads, but this will be only for fun...

In the standard Codex: Space Marines, Dreadnoughts don't really have a place in a list. To fragile, and they don't do enough damage output in the areas they are designed for.
The only real exceptions are Contemptor Dreads, and Contemptor Mortis' at that. Paired Kheres Assault Cannons and a CML is 14 shots a turn, 12 at S6, Ap4, Rending.
But you can only use those if you have the cash to shell out for the FW Model and the Rulebook for it, as well as it requiring your area to allow Forgeworld.

In my experience the dreads out of the primary SM dex is best limited to ironclads in drop pods as a very effective (albeit expensive) diversion or cheap heavy weapons platforms in very small games <750.
Codex BA on the other hand provides some really fun/effective/cool options.
