Subject: Painting Dark Vengeance as Blood Angels, Heresy?

G'day all,
Thinking of grabbing the Dark Vengeance set, since I have no interest in Chaos and while I don't hate Dark Angels, I think red marines can look cooler than dark green ones, soooo...
Would I be committing some grievous sin to paint the Dark Angels in the Dark Vengeance set as Blood Angels instead? I had a glance at the models and it seems the only real difference in iconography is there's a sword instead of a drop of blood through the wings. So I'll just paint the sword red, or maybe white.
I'm not overly familiar with either chapter and thought I'd ask on here before I do something silly. I have no great desire to do any time consuming conversions like filing off or sculpting on iconography, as it would just be a side army that I throw together. So if they can't just be painted red and called Blood Angels, I probably won't bother buying the box.
Cheers!

They're your models mate. Paint them as you please. The DV marines would look fine in red and as you say you could just paint the chapter symbol differently. To be honest though I don't think it'd take much to snip and shave the sword into a rough blood drop shape. Snip of the end of the blade, carve out the crossguard, grip and pommel with a knife. Shape yourself a small blood drop out of what remains.
Ok so maybe it'd take a bit of work.
Alternatively you could just carve out the whole sword and make up a greenstuff tear-drop to put in between the wings.

Wouldn't that last teardrop-wingy thing be Blood Ravens, tho?

Yeah, more work than I want to do I only get a few hours a week for the hobby, so it'd probably take me a couple of weeks to get all the swords off and greenstuffed blood drops, lol. I guess I was just wondering if I paint them as BA with no conversions, would people at my local club respond with "HERESY!! THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE X,Y,Z, NOT A,B,C!! I WILL NOT PLAY AGAINST YOUR NON- WYSIWYG ABOMINATION" or would the response be "cool, looks good, lets play" (assuming I paint them well ). I actually already have a SW army, it's just I don't want to go to the effort of converting them to SW, I just wanted to whip them up as some BA to have another small army to play when I get bored of all my other armies, lol.

I´m converting mine into SW but that´s easier then other chapters, because all you need to do is shave the symbols off a bit and then sculpt some fur over it and your done.
The dudes with the robes will be tougher but I guess that´s still possible.

It's not just the left badge that is wrong; dark angels use a different system for squad markings too.
I say paint them as a coalition of Blood Angels successor chapters. Red colours and winged heraldry are perfect, and you'll note Blood Angels have a slight sword fetish (the pre-update 5th ed codex generally has options for 'power swords' instead of 'power weapons'). Iconography that happens to match dark angel / death wing / raven wing makes sense as a coincidence.
I believe there is also precedent for some blood angel successors using the standard codex system for squad markings (like Dark Angels use).
In short the iconography on the DV models can be seen with a blood angel slant when viewed as a successor chapter. Note, it is conventional for blood angel successors to use predominantly red colour schemes.
Edit: an alternative option would to paint them red and call them dark angels. There is precedent for chapters using campaign colours, so red dark angels with standard dark angel markings isn't actually all that out there.
I recommend finding a copy of Codex: Angels of Death as this will allow you to understand the differences between DA and BA. It will also give you some ideas for successor chapter themes.

I actually have the Angels of Death codex, my mate used to collect DA back in 2nd edition and when he quit he gave me his books.
So BA have the company marking on the right shoulder rather than a squad marking?
I don't think that's a huge difference, can just call it a successor chapter that for some reason uses DA squad markings, (as the DA squad markings aren't the same as vanilla marines either). Yeah, I definitely think it's possible to turn them in to SW, I really just don't want to spend the time as other commitments give me too little time to work on miniatures. If it's going to take me an hour or two per model to convert them, I'd sooner just buy SW models.

Just declare it a chimeric successor chapter (a chapter whose geneseed was mixed from BA and DA). So you get the BA colors and the DA icons. Bam, instant fluffy solution without filing away anything.
Fluff-Advocates would probably criticise that the DA try to keep a tight leash on all their successors while BA may not be the safest genestock to begin with, but whatever, in the grimdark future everything is possible except for good rules and cheap models.

Paint them how you like. Theyre your figures.
Mine are purple hehe, the DA winged sword could probably be modded to be closer to the blood drop too; use your knife to carefully remove the hilt and guard on the sword, and round out the bottom a little. Or file it out, keeping the wings and greenstuff in a drop.
this would leave only the wing tips being square rather than pointy, and easy fix but not essential.

For whatever reason I had never considered doing this, but after reading your ideas I totally think I will. Although I will probably file off the markings and replace them with GS or brass or something.
