I've always loved using bodily fluids in paintings and stuff (you can have a lot of fun with blacklights), and I wanted to incorporate that into my mini painting. Well, it just so happens that I have a Dark Eldar Raider that was begging to be painted!

Does anyone have experience with this? I expect it to turn brown, but I'm concerned about brushing on a topcoat.

Not only does blood brown, but it can mold.

Its also a serious health hazard. Its one thing if its a model destined for a display case or a painting, but these are gaming miniatures, other people are going to be interacting with the model, its ethically wrong and unsanitary to use your bodily fluids in such a manner.

I understand the want:

Want a realistic rock? Use a rock!

Want realistic metals? Use metal!

Want realistic rust? Use rust!

Things that should not be actually used:

Fire, painted is just fine, maybe fancy lights and cotton balls...

Bodily fluids, they denature, smell, pose health risks, just say no, combining with DE spikey bits is just begging for exposure. It also sucks when the pets take an interest in your painted models.

Smoke, sounds cool, disconcerting, but cool.

If you feel you must use blood, collect some from your next steak. Cutting yourself as some do is much akin to some cult ritual for anointing them for battle...

What have you run out of red paint? you obviously have some weird thing doing on that you like to paint with your "fluids" but c'mon guy people you play against could have to touch that sail at some point. Unless you don't play the game then by all means goo and bleed on whatever you like. Maybe I have a weak stomach but you have definitely unsettled it.

no. No. NO.

I know red is harder to paint, but start with a foundation red, maybe a brown, slowly mix your red in and highlight from there.

Vallejo Terracota works great as a base for red. Just not your own blood.

I know GW takes a lot of flak from the Internet lately but I swear up and down by their new Blood for the Blood God technical paint. I have used it to pretty awesome effect.

Plus it's a lot more sanitary, and less "eww" cringeworthy.

ummmmm, hmmmmm, ermmmmm, ahhhhhhh... thats odd, i seriously question the okness of this act..... in short, gross.

I mean seriously, your blood is more precious than paint, so use paint... plus it wont rott or brown and more importantly you arent gonna awaken some pathogenic organism that was lying dormant for years resulting in an apocalypse...

Seriously dude, big no no

There is a guy at my flgs who actually painted some of his blood on a bloodthirster, and no one thinks it is weird.

It didn't really look like it, but looked like you could have watered it down to go further... Did you just want some attention through this or to see if your paint looks like real blood? either way i was worried somebody was going to unwittingly touch this, and am still a little concerned about the fun you have with Blacklights.

Why? It's a biohazard it will mold and turn brown. Just use a ink wash or the tons of other options to make blood effect. Don't let your local GW store know they might ban you from playing with a biohazard model. All kinds of blood pathogen disease can transmit through blood.

Thats what I really love about the hobby. The amounts of pure, undiluted WTF are just staggering.

You've got lots of creative types doing marvels with a sheet of plasticard and some paint.
You've got guys who never took an interest to the stock market but who'll religiously analyze the development of GW shares and theoretize which descisions will be made by the management based on that.
And then there are gems such as this. Well, I've got no problems with blood for the blood god but when it comes to bodily fluids I definitely draw the line at nurgle.

As for the sense behind this, everything is said above. Blood can mold and will change color so it's not exactly what you want for blood effects, rather more realistic nurgle style. I wouldn't bother about pathogens and suchlike, your models won't magically turn into a source of nurgles rot, as long as you are not contaminated yourself but cutting you with anything increases the risk of infection. Not necessary with the cutting implement but you'll have an open wound which is an invitation to any bacteria around.

Think we're done then.

In general the use of ones -- or indeed someone elses' -- bodily fluids in mini painting is best avoided.

With the notable exception of elbow grease, sweat and tears of frustration of course.
