Quick question:

Currently painting some Eldar Guardians. I have basecoated them with Waaagh! Flesh and washed with Biel-Tan Green. Would I now paint right over the basecoat (everywhere but the recesses) using a Layer paint or would I use the Layer paints only over the sharp edges, leaving the washed basecoat clearly showing through?

Just starting out...

Depends on the look you're going for. Gritty and war-torn, or do you want a nice clean fresh-off-the-craftworld appearance, with only shadows being where they should be - in the recesses?

If the former, only highlight where light will hit and maybe do some drybrushing so it doesn't look like you're relying solely on inks to do your work (pooling is obvious). If you want a clean look, apply thin layers all over except the recesses, and lighten the layers as you please.

Highlighting will be your final step, once layering is all done, you'll do one final application of paint to the most raised areas using your lightest version of that color (if you're going for a conventional uniform appearance, of course).
