Holy Herp-derp, Batman! This is something out of the old East Germany playbook.

Women in Iran may not be allowed to attend football matches between male sides for religious reasons, but the beautiful game is popular among the Islamic republic's female population.

Players in Iran's burgeoning professional women's football league will now be subjected to mandatory gender tests, after it has been revealed that four national team players were found guilty of not being women. The Telegraph reports:
The Telegraph wrote:The country's football governing body is bringing in the random checks after it was revealed that several leading players - including four in the national women's team - were either men who had not completed sex change operations, or were suffering from sexual development disorders.
Medical inspectors will now randomly attend professional women's games — and those in the indoor "footsal" league — to carry out spot checks.

Furthermore, clubs will now be obliged to perform gender tests before signing new players to contracts. Those unable to prove they are female would be barred from taking part in the league "until they underwent medical treatment," said Ahmad Hashemian, the head of the Iranian football federation's medical committee.

The Telegraph note that sex changes are often carried out in two-year phases in Iran, but they represent a legal grey area: they are permitted under a fatwa issued by the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1979, but contravene the sexual morality code of Sharia Law.

So far, a total of seven players have been barred from the league after failing gender tests.

I'm honestly amazed Iran allows people to get sex changes at all. Guess what they say is true. The Ayatollah isn't the worst human being on the planet

I actually recall reading that there is a Hadith in which Muhammad explains that being a transgender woman (that is to say man who identifies as a woman) is not immoral as long as the person in question isn't in a relationship with another man. I guess the Ayatollahs have extrapolated that to mean that sex-change operations for male-to-female transgender people is acceptable.

That's pretty much just 'some guy sometime said Muhammad said something'. Most Hadith are fake (might as well make their dictionary definition 'forgery'), and that certainly sounds like one XD

Khomeini is a rather liberal Muslim on many social issues. It's part of his conflict with Ahmaguywhosenameicanneverspellrightorremember. I just didn't think he was that liberal.

Very possible, I should see if that particular one is in any of the traditionally-accepted collections of Hadith, all though Shi'as tend to accept quite a few Hadith that Sunnis do not (and vice versa) so this could be one of them.

Yeah, I was surprised when I first heard about this, especially when they consider homosexuality a capital offense.

So how do they carry out the checks?

Do they do it Catholic Papal style, sitting on a chair with a hole on the seat so a committee of Officials can take turns to inspect the players' nether regions and ensure nothing is amiss?

Or do they do it TSA style - an intimate inspection by hand from a surly and not at all perverse rubber gloved Official with a full body x-ray scan for good measure and the threat of a strip seach if the players protest?

Khomeini was kind of open minded on the issue, and basically convinced by the extraordinary efforts of one lady who's name I've forgotten. Iran is now second in the world behind Thailand in sex change operations, and even has a government subsidy for the procedure.

That doesn't mean it's smart to go around openly declaring you're a post-op transgender, but compared to what is done to homosexuals, it just goes to show there is nothing on this earth as weird or diverse as sex and gender politics.

To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

If they can't tell who is what over there I have to wonder what this says about the attractiveness of the average female player.

Or perhaps their male soccer players just happen to be very, very pretty?

Well, given that soccer lends itself to memes like this, I'm thinking it may be pretty easy for them to pass as women.

People seem to be getting confused between Ayatollah Khomeini (Supreme Leader after the Islamic Revolution) and Ayatollah Khameini (the current Supreme Leader).

That the former said sex changes were OK is really quite surprising as he was way more hard-line than the current one in many ways.
