Subject: 750 Point Empire Vanguard Assault List

Prescient Cryptek of Eternity

Hello All!
First and foremost, I am a 40k player. My buddies play Fantasy and I'm going to jump in head first!
We're going to start out with the recently released Vanguard Assault expansion thing... essentially 500-750 point games with some bonuses given to "no heavy" type units.
I want to know if the following is a viable list in a casual, low points environment. I may be approaching this as too much of a 40k player. I'd really like to focus on shooting and stay out of combat if at all possible!
Hero (11%)
Master Engineer w/Hochland Long Rifle
Core (48%)
9 Handgunners, 1 Marksman w/Hochland Long Rifle
9 Handgunners, 1 Marksman w/Hochland Long Rifle
9 Handgunners, 1 Marksman w/Hochland Long Rifle
Special (24%)
9 Huntsmen, 1 Tracker
5 Pistoliers
Rare (16%)
1 Helblaster Volley Gun
745 points total
My idea is to have the Handgunners/Volley Gun provide most of the Dakka while the Huntsmen and Pistoliers buy me extra turns and shoot what they're able to.
Any feedback? Am I way off. Remember, low points value and casual environment. I shouldn't be encountering any min/maxxer type players.

Well gun line armies are generally viewed with disdain and thought of as the min/ max type.....
Especially in low point environments lists such as this don't really make friends , is it optimized not exactly, will it be frustrating to some people ..... Yes

I'm not trying to min/max at all. I just really hate melee combat. I've been playing a Tau army in 40k for YEARS... long before all the current talk of overpowered units.
Is playing a predominantly shooty/magic list in Fantasy considered to be a jerk move? I genuinely don't know. I'm very new to the game.

Shooting is not as effective in fantasy as it is in 40k. Any army with cav will eat this list apart. Bretonians will demolish you as well as any shooty elf list as they have better range and BS. In my experiance a well ballanced army. You will break armies that have a mid-low lvl armor that is slow moving but if anything can get in your face by turn 2 maybe 3 you will crumble in CC.

It's a shame that Fantasy is so combat oriented. As a 40k player who focuses on mobility and ranged combat, there doesn't seem to be a real good option for me on the Fantasy side of things.

Personally I think Bret's would get eaten by this list, armor piercing str 4 shots? 10 KoR is 240 Pts and when 2+ goes to 5+ Irrc they lost one of their huge strengths
Cc is predominant though as this game has a lot to do with maneuvering, redirecting and flanking, but some armies can reduce you to shambles before the combat happens with magic / shooting
Empire is a great army to begin with / master they can run most any type of list effectively ; gunline , Calvary, horde, and lots in between

I think you'll find that fantasy rewards tactful play in the deployment/movement phase a LOT more than 40k does. Redirecting chargers, frenzy-baiting, march blocking and the like are all ways to harass enemy combat blocks and slow their advance and buy your shooting units another turn or two.
As for it being a 'shame that fantasy is so combat oriented' I think that's kind of a silly comment. It's completely within context for the setting that combat is the main focus of larger scale battles. It would be kind of silly to just apply 40k logic to a setting that is based of a completely different period of time.
It sounds as though Wood Elves play style might appeal to you though. They are pretty much the run and gun/mobile firepower kings of fantasy, however this isn't an easy play style to win with in this edition.

Meh, it's a shame for me I suppose. I like the models, but as a 40k player, the overly important deployment and heavy importance on movement becomes very tiresome. It's simply much less important in 40k, so it's easy to ignore things like facings. I just want to run around, shoot stuff and have some fun. I guess I like the "cinematic" feel of 40k and Fantasy doesn't seem to have that for me.
I might have to look into Wood Elves, though. Thanks for the advice.

Dark Elves are also a good move and shoot army. But it does sound like Warhammer isn't the game for you. It is all about combat. If you want to just sit still and roll dice Tau in 40k is what you should probably stick to.
