There is another thread, a poster claims a "London borough GW store manager" is requiring you to buy 10 Great British Pounds of stuff for every 2 hours you are in the store in order to use the tables/paint station...

So, anyone who games at any of these official GW store locations, experience that?

There's also one in Bromley. I was surprised to see the London Wall location, looked it up and i think that's an office, not a store. Don't forget Bluewater, which is just in the M25.

Edit: Myddleton Street looks to have gone. Shame, looked like an interesting location.

We've been in Oxford St and Bluewater the last few weeks, no charges in either.

True story : GW store managers are very pleased the directory exists -- be it in Visions or the previous version of WD -- as they often use it as a directory when/if they need to get in contact with another store.

I facebook contacted all London GWs with private message about this...

"Strange question, but on a game blog a UK bloke claims his local GW in a London borough is now requiring a £10 every 2 hours purchase in order to use the game or paint tables! I think he is full of it, and I wanted to know if it were true, or if you think a manager is breaking the rules, or something...."

Contacted GW HQ too, and they are investigating.

There's no investigation happening, managers have been empowered to make their own decisions, as long as they do what they're told.
Schemes like this normally work for someone and so become the new fad for managers.

This isn't about charging for tables, it's about rewarding people for spending money instores, it's a variation of orks teef, hobby vouchers, and various others

Put yourself in the shoes of a store manager, you're selling the product at the most expensive price point it has, the internet is cheaper, whilst you have the advantage of convenience that can also be found in enough local independents, It's your responsibility to find a way of convincing people to 'support' their store. If limiting facility usage to customers (specifically customers of the store, not gw customers in general) is the way they want to do it then it could work

Is there anything concrete on that this actually happened , wasn't it just some guy who made an account with a few posts decided to stir up some fun and now it's erupting into an international scandal.

Variations of ot have been happening in uk stores for the last 12 months

The cribbs causeway do it in a style

They run a hobby bar, to use the hobby bar you have to buy a core box or battleforce to spend the week getting it built and painted instore before playing a game at the weekend

They vary the requirements dependent on releases, focuses etc

It's not a bad thing, it's no different than a lot of stores running painting competitions requiring you to buy the model to be eligible

wow that's crazy. I'd never set foot in my local GW again if the manager started charging for playtime.

Since my local manager flat out removed the tables in the store since they were letting people hang around too much, i wonder if i would rather have had him charge for them and kept them.

The OP (or original instigator) should have said

"My local GW store is so busy and crowded that they worked up a system, that for every 10 GBP you spend, you earn a voucher for 2 hours time for either a game table or painting station."

That would have been a clear statement, that is GW policy based on circumstances and manager discretion, but rarely used except in really busy scenarios....

Nice too see someone following up on things like this to find the truth and give GW stores a say in the matter.

We have no real GW stores here in Sweden (not near were I live anyway) but every store I have been in have allways had the best of welcome and help.

Wow! I only check dakka every now and then but i come back and see this angry stuff posted on this thread! Some of it is so aggressive and insulting! My responses are not solely aimed at the poster i have quoted (though he does seem to be the most disturbed) but to answer all questions. To clear a few things up after reading the buckettloads of responses:

1. First of all I want to make it clear my original post was the absolute truth. Nothing misleading about it. It may have been misconstrued, perhaps I might have worded it better but it was absolutely true and I am not a troll. There were no vouchers involved and it had nothing to do with the store being too busy- quite the opposite actually i suspect.

2. To the people that wanted to know if I bought my most recent army from this store the answer is: some of it yes, some of it from another GW store and some of it online as bits.

3. Update to situation: 3 days ago I went in the store and was informed that the regional manager had been in touch with the store manager and he had informed him he can't require any monetary purchase for time in store and the policy has been reversed. I suspect this may have been due to the heat created on this very forum and particularly from the actions of the poster I have quoted above as I have seen he has gained responses from at least one manager geographically close to my local store whom I know has connections with my local store- so ironically I may have to thank you for that despite how quick you have been to call me a liar.

4. Directly to the poster above. You are very wrong. In previous posts you accused me of bullsh#ting simply because I won't name the store. I already stated in a previous post that the fact is I didn't want to land the manager in trouble cos he is a really nice guy and works hard. Although I don't agree with him bringing in this policy I've known him for a while and he certainly wasn't trying to con anyone. I just think his store has hit hard times through no fault of his own cos I see how hard he works to bring people in when I am in there. Why would I want to get him in trouble? We are not all vengeful. Sometimes looking out for someone you think is a decent guy is more important than getting your own way. I know dakka is full of arguementative tw#ts but you were too quick to pull the trigger at me dude. I am not a liar. Apologies if I offended. It was hard to believe what you were claiming was true. But it does look like there was one crooked manager out there doing it afterall. I was just thinking of all the gamers getting ripped off (like you) and the bad rap gw was going to get on it, so best to get on it fast and early. I find it strange that you believed this manager and believed it was policy, yet were afraid to say what location and manager. If you thought it was legit, you would have said. So there was some doubt in your mind. Keep in mind this nice guy manager you keep refering to is ripping people off...

if HE WAS FOLLOWING POLICY, HE WOULDN'T GET IN TROUBLE. The fact is, right from GWs mouth, this was never policy to begin with & the manager was in fact violating GW policy. In essence stealing from GW & the gamers! Great friend of yours by the way.....

Thanks for the email,In order to take part in specific events in store, the stores may require you to purchase particular items, however it is not company policy to charge simply to use gaming tables or paint stations. If you let us know which store in particular you are referring to, we will be happy to contact the manager, and request that they amend this policy.
