what exactly is the best ork alliance? I know orkz will soon be getting a new codex and the obvious answer to my question is tau but what other alliances are used with orks as the primary army used. just curious

Most games i see tend to be Orks allone but if with allies it's either Tau / IG or Deamons. why? i get the two first due their shootyness... as for deamons... more mass of melee attacks?

Necrons are another big choice as they have access to cheap fliers that can drop off troops. Chaos Space Marines is another with their access to the heldrake.

I've seen a bit of Orks/IG, and a bit of Orks/Dread Mob. I'm gonna give Orks/Daemons a go purely because I've modelled some looted daemon stuff. If it works then thats just icing on the cake

Ooohh...orks/dread mob sounds very fun indeed. Especially if dread mob is primary and you bring orks as the allied detachment.

I really want to fight a dread mob sometime. I'm honestly not at all sure how well my army would fare, but I just think it would be a really fun experience to see that giant wall of walkers charging at me.

I know the Dread Mob rules are available, is there an updated allies chart somewhere that I may be missing?

I ask because I only recently picked up the Dark Vengeance rulebook, and I'm planning to re-learn the game after several editions' absence. I know about allies, but from what I recall of my brief glance at the chart in the rulebook, Dread Mob wasn't mentioned.

Thanks!

The obvious solution is Chaos Marines, so you can rock some old school Stormboyz of Khorne:

I've played doubles with a Nurgle CSM pal a number of times. While the resulting alliance is not too hot on the firepower department, it can succeed against certain foes if played right - My hordes speed forward in BWs to tie up the enemy's shootiest units in CC, lootas and oblits (and the occasional forgefiend) provide ranged support, my bikernobs/bikerboss and his biker lord/spawn do the heavy lifting and his plague marines sit on objectives.

War does not determine who is right - only who is left.

I'm a fan of Orks/Tau. Both armies do a fairly nice job of covering each other's weaknesses - Orks can rush ahead with Nob Biker squads (or even just regular biker squads) and tackle anything that might try to get into assault, Tau can cover them with long-range fire. Even if the entire Ork army is an ally detachment with a Biker Boss and a squad of Nob Bikers, it does a fine job of backing up the Tau.

The issue with all allies is that you have to get a HQ and troops which are worse than ours. Orks HQs(warboss/KFF mek) and boys are pretty hard to beat.

I agree with Locclo though, tau have a lot which orks don't get while orks have things which tau don't get.

For those two reason, the very best allies you can get is the tau firebase data slate: Six Broadsides and a Riptide, no additional cost, no troops, no HQ and all of them get tank-hunter for free. You pretty much get a metric ton of long-ranged high strength firepower to simply add to your orks as if they'd belong there.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Yeah just that tau and orks are a obvious choice and I don't want to do it, I know it sounds weird but I prefer to take alternative ways around a problem and I wanted to see what other alliances worked outside of those two

Other than tau, the IG works really well. While HQ and troops are cheap, you can get heavy fire power in both fast attack and heavy support. The obvious choices would be the vendetta and manticore, but valkyries, leman russes, basilisks and fast tanks also work a lot better than they are given credit for, and almost all of them can be taken in squadrons of up to three.

They ring a bell. Were they about in 2nd Ed or was it before then?

On the topic question... yeah I'd probably go with 'Crons if someone held a gun to my head and say 'you must have allies of a different race'. Tactically, anything with reliable access to high strength AP2 or better helps a lot, but me? Would rather have more Orks.
