I know I'm allowed paint my models any colour I choose, they are my models after all, but what kind of things do I need to pay attention to to make sure that it fits within the lore? I want my chapters colours to be white and crimson with black edging, and dedicated to Khorne. How do I go about naming it? Etc.

North of your position

Well, there's no "fluff-problems" that might come up when picking colors, and your color scheme seems to fit for a Khornate group.

Calling a CSM Warband a Chapter is bad, however. Boo!

Your name should probably fit with your warband - in this case, they worship Khorne, so there's likely to be any of the words "Blood", "Battle", "Gore" or "Murder" in it.

Sorry about the wrong nomenclature, I'm only getting into Chaos recently.

My guys (in my head) physically need blood and pain (others and their own) to survive. They torture themselves and each other as much as everyone else, and are heavily into decorating themselves with the spoils of war. I'm thinking of naming them one of the following...

Faces of Death
Sons of Carnage
Tortured Vassals (of Khorne).

Chaos is extremely open-ended. It's hard to come up with fluff that DOESN'T fit in.

Yep, you can make your own. Between 30K and 40K, lots of marines have fallen to Chaos.

Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows.

That being said, to make them fit in the lore you just come up with some kinda theme (which it sounds like you already have) and wait to encounter conflicts with lore (by reading or discussion). If a conflict arises you come up with a fluff explanation as to why its not a conflict or you tweak your armies fluff to remedy it. I would say its a near impossible task to sit down and come up with the fluff for any group without having conflicts (just ask the black library authors). However, if you just go with it and refine it time to time it will be good in the end.

I might reccomend 'The Children of Khorne,' but it's up to you.

Well, and worst case, what happens on the extremely low chance that you wind up playing against another CSM chapter with the same name?

An eternal grudge match to determine who the REAL such-and-such are.

Can't see anything wrong with that.

Remember if you want it to be larger than a Warband (which tend to be a fallen Chapter, so probably less than 1000 guys due to some members dying), there's a reason GW officially gave us no word at all on the two missing legions and their primarchs. If you want to introduce an entire legion of guys, say it's one of them!

It's also fairly easy for Warbands to simply grow larger than Chapters from sustaining less casualties and maintaining the ability to create more astartes. There's no reason why a thousand couldn't grow into three thousand or greater over time, both from recruiting other CSM's and creating more.

And don't forget recruiting other SM either.

There have been plenty of marines in singles, pairs, and squads that have gone over to existing CSM groups as well.

Okay, sounds great. Is there any other name I can use apart from "warband?" I don't like how it sounds.

Word Bearers call their forces a 'Host' You could always call it a 'murder' (like a murder of crows.)

Never forget though, when marines go over to the dark side, whilst we may leave behind the Thunderfire cannons, storm shields, storm bolters, storm ravens, centurion armour, razorbacks etc etc........

We still take the apothecaries with us, so we can make more marines provided we have suitable subjects. Chaos Marines could probably travel to a world of the Imperium and collect recruits from there, most people have never seen a space marine and even fewer could tell the difference between a normal and a chaos marine apart.
