Now I positively hate the model for the Heldrake from GW, but I do want to play at a lot of competitive events. I know that i would need to check with TOs as needed, but what do the general populous think about using a Dark Elf Dragon as a Drake?

Add some metal plating and spiky bits to be safe, but yeah.

I'd want you to Chaos it up a bit. Skulls, spikes, metal plates, unholy symbols, the whole nine.

I would like to add on tendrils, some spare chaos bits I have, and other accoutrements to it, but I cannot say they will be more then 20% of the whole model. I'll admit most of my spares are form the Prince, Tzeentch Chariot, Screamer, and Horror kits, but I have the odd Chaos Marine bit here and there along with some spare Soul Grinder/ Defiler bits.

Yes, tell anyone who complains to get over it, there are conversions that do not work but this is fine.

I chose yes because I don't play competitive so I don't care what people use as counts as, neither would I at a tournament.

However, I think you'd definitely want to convert it for tournament use because if you can't look at something and get a general idea of what it's supposed to be, there is room for complaint from your opponent. And where there is room, somebody WILL eventually go inside that room and throw a slowed temper tantrum.

Maybe you could lean it forward and somehow make it have a somewhat flatter profile like the helturkey.

Do it!
I'm using the high elf dragon, basically modelled in the same shape as the heldrake. Just need spikes.

Dimentions are simular enough and with HD you need to worry less about weapon mounting so... Yeah

Heldrake has more flexibility when it comes to Conversions, just take the Bale-Flamer Marine-Melting-thingy that we all love so much.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Its still better then my buddy who uses a High Elf Phenix...,with no conversion at all...

SO yeah with a decent conversion job, there is no problem.

Yes, because I still think the Helldrake looks like crap.

I may be a minority here, but I LOVE the Heldrake. I just went up to my rooftop to spray prime my second one and I'm waiting for it to dry to start painting and washing it up!

But I do understand the desire to have a cool "Counts-as".

Kudos for sticking with an actual Dragon and not a Helblade or Elf Phoenix like I've been seeing. More like an actual Daemon than Daemon Machine.

So I picked it up and started converting, but man is that dragon small. He is a lot smaller then I was thinking he would be, which has made my mind up to just purchase an actual Heldrake eventually. I'm not dissatisfied with him don't get me wrong, the initial groundwork has him looking alright in my eyes, just the size is very jarring.

There's a great conversion out there using a VC Terrorgheist and a Forgefiend bits. I've copied the idea behind it and have the Heldrake 75% modeled (except for the head, looking to pick up a better head/flamer) and there are enough parts for a Forgefiend in a more dynamic pose (use the Maulerfiend CCW as front legs for the Forgefiend). So using two kits, you can make both a Heldrake and Forgefiend, and both likely to be unique in your area.

Bonus is I think the Heldrake looks better as a mechanized dragon rather than a living plane.

Considering it look nothing like a machine, nor like chaos, I would not accept it without some serious conversion work.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

It's no where near the size or shape of a Helldrake. I'm fine with proxies and "counts as", but vehicles' shape matters.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

i would use the High Elf Dragon as a base (better shape, but would need more conversion to look right) use a flying stand (to make it taller)/ oval base (for the flamer), spiky chaos bits, or even better yet, find a way to morph the helldrake and dragon kits together, to get more of a armored beast/deamon.

SOme inspirations.

And this one is mine.

As you can see there is a bucket-crap-load of ways to do it.

Just give it your best to do it how you like it.

Mix the DE Dragon and Heldrake bits, or even with other stuffs.
