It is a simple matter of scale. In the space marine example;

A typical space marine is 8ft tall, with that information you can do the math. If the space marine is 8ft tall, and the figure is say 28mm tall, doing the math will give you a ratio. Simply take the size of the weapon you are looking for, and reverse your equation, and you will have the approximate 1:1 scale size of a bolter.
