Since I do get alot of crazy ideas I was thinking of trying to make prop size versions of alot of the different mainweapons from 40k.

For this I need your brainpower. I am not familiar with all the scales of the different races. The general shape I can get from art and the game models but the scale is harder. So what I was thinking is that you help me get an approximate length measurement from barrel to but on the different hand held firearms from the races you know. I will then summarize with a list in this top post.

MEASUREMENTS:

ELDAR
  • Shuriken Catapult, ???cm
  • Shuriken Pistol, ???cm

  • IMPERIAL GUARD
  • Lasgun, ???cm
  • Laspistol, ???cm

  • SPACE MARINES
  • Boltgun, ???cm
  • Plasmagun, ???cm
  • Bolt Pistol, ???cm

  • TAU
  • Pulse Rifle, ???cm
  • Rail Rifle, ???cm
  • Ion Rifle, ???cm
  • Burst Cannon, ???cm

I have added a few weapons that I am particularly interested in, but I am still looking for sizing info on ALL the handheld firearms in 40k.

EDIT: Btw, if you are used to use inches as measurements it's ok aswell. I can convert easily enough.

    Which type of lasgun?

As far as the size of a Space Marine bolter, they're listed as .75 caliber. Which means they're about the diameter of a 12 gauge shotgun round, or just a hair more than 19mm.

In the Grim Darkness of the Far Future, there is only Cake. Or Death. And the Emperor is all out of Cake.

I was thinking the regular rank and file basemodel as listed in the codex.

It doesnt get me very much closer but still a good number to have since it gives you a base for clip dimensions.

Really ends up being a question of what you are trying to do.

As mentioned, things like the bolter round have had real world data applied to them. However, in games, this number is never used for scaling. The bolter barrel is several inches in diameter.

If you look at real world examples of comparable weapons, you get a better idea of just how far GW is off. Guns like the AA-12 are not much larger than a weapon that fires a smaller round.

Of course, if that isnt your goal and you wish to maintain the same scaling issues...you will want to forgoe measurements entirely and use a calibrated eyeball. To make it look like the miniatures, you will need to adjust almost every dimension unless you intend on wearing base ball mitts and a giant foam head with clown shoes.

A good starting point for either endeavor though are the Forge World books. They tend to have drawings which are more useful for pattern making to get things looking more or less right.

Hmm, maby I wasn't really clear.

I am thinking of a 1:1 ie real world scaling. I am not thinking that I would use them, they are more supposed to be display pieces.

That would mean that I need to establish the weapons in relations to their races and then figure out the measurements. For example, the Tau are WAY smaller than Space Marines according to the fluff. That would mean that I need to figure out the relative size difference between say Tau and Space Marines and from there infer the size of the weapons.

I do know that there is no consistent scaling and that eyeballing will be the primary tool for shape and dimensions, that is why I was asking for approximate lengths and nothing more.

    It is a simple matter of scale. In the space marine example;

A typical space marine is 8ft tall, with that information you can do the math. If the space marine is 8ft tall, and the figure is say 28mm tall, doing the math will give you a ratio. Simply take the size of the weapon you are looking for, and reverse your equation, and you will have the approximate 1:1 scale size of a bolter.
