I don't have the points, but I was wondering if a near-total gunline Nid list could work. It would look something like this;
Flyrant w/TL Devourers
2/3x20/30 Termagants, with Tervigon to keep them topped up
Zoanthropes
Venomthropes
Exocrine
Harpy/Hive Crone, possibly Gargoyles
Shooty Warriors

Maybe some counter assault units too, but is this viable?

I don't think shooty nids are a bad idea, however, I -do- think that gunline nids are not going to be effective given the relative short range of their guns. You're going to be out-ranged by other shooting armies.

You have access to things like Catalyst and tons of MCs that can move effecitvely and fire heavily (2-devourerer Carnifex broods), so you'll be able to shoot like crazy, but I'd not bunker down, either.

So, a shooting list can work. Sort of like a walking gunline? Walks up the board, unleashing hell with the big guns, then opening up the little ones with whoevers left

Basically yeah. It's comes in layers.

In front are your gaunts, behind them are your Carnifexes/Exocrines/Zoanthropes and behind them are your Venomthropes. Your Flyrants work as anti-air, buff-casters or flankers.

You put your opponent into situations where they have to choose shooting at your big stuff which has high Toughness and a decent to great cover save from the screening gaunts and Venomthropes, or shooting at your gaunts which hardly eliminates threats. All the while, you are steadily advancing, pounding as much shots into them as possible, and charging with your MCs if you get to things that are not easily swayed by firepower.

Ouch. Can that work in small size games?

The problem is the entire strategy falls apart against any weapon that ignores cover. All you need to do is kill the venomthrope first which only takes a single wave serpent, then the gimmick of cover saves vanishes.

Unfortunately the whole layer thing doesn't work all that well because nids are simply too slow and opponents will deploy further back because they most likely have guns with effective ranges.

Why not take fast units then?

Flyrants, Raveners, Trygons, Crones, Gargoyles, have a venomthrope in a Bastion up front for one-2 turns of shrouded and then ditch it for the assault. Troops have minimum GStealers infiltrating and small Warrior squads.

However, I agree that a slow moving shooty list doesn't seem like the best option.

Ok, here: 2000

Flyrant, Devs
Flyrant, Devs
Crone
Venomthrope in Bastion
15 gargoyles
2x 9 Raveners (RC)
9 Shrikes (RC)
2x 5 Genestealers
3 Warriors

I think that many players would be very scared by this army...

I just played in a 1200pt tourney with my blast spam nids - 3 biovores, 3 barbed strangler warrior squads, and 3 stranglethorn 'fexes. I went too light on little guys, and wasn't fast enough. Won one, lost one - speed would have won me two as I was overwhelmed by bodies in the second game. Loads of tldevs would have been helpful as well, but I'm now considering going with fast bugs instead - lose some shooting but gain mobility. Crones are looking appealing, and devourer-flyrants especially.

Thinking troops could be small warrior squads babysitting 20-30 strong termagant squads. Fmc spam might just be the key for me, faster is just better.

The most effective Nid lists are the ones that utilise their ability to be effective in both shooting and assault.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Shooty Nids? Yes
Gunline...No but you can make a close shooting army that can work very well, and the Big Bugs can carry Big Guns...
