I really like the looks of the vortex templates, would it be possible to use them for regular WHFB games and not storm of magic? Mostly for the visual effect it adds to a gaming table while playing.

I'd say go for it. They're just a large (boosted spell) template anyway, I can't see any reason why you couldn't use it in a game of normal fantasy.

IIRC, most of them aren't large templates, they're the 3" templates just like the Vortex grenade and WWP for 40K were.

Either way, they're the same size as the regular templates.
