Subject: Florida Democrat Espouses view on Immigration Reform.
Washington Free Beacon Staff wrote:Florida Democrat: Without Immigration Reform, Where Will We Get Our Landscapers and Maids?
Florida Democratic congressional candidate Alex Sink said immigration reform was important at a Tuesday debate because, without it, it would be difficult for employers to find people to clean hotel rooms and do landscaping.
“Immigration reform is important in our country,” she said. “We have a lot of employers over on the beaches that rely upon workers and especially in this high-growth environment, where are you going to get people to work to clean our hotel rooms or do our landscaping? We don’t need to put those employers in a position of hiring undocumented and illegal workers.”
Evidently, without this reform, these blue-collar jobs will fall into the hands of illegal aliens.
Sink is running in a special election for Florida’s 13th congressional seat, which was vacated upon the death of Bill Young last year. She ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2010 against Rick Scott.

I don't see what's so stupid about it, it might not be the most polite way of saying it but it's true that those jobs are often done by illegal immigrants because nobody else wants them. You might as well recognize that it's happening and provide a way for them to be legal employees.

The stupid part is that she is basically admitting that the push for immigration reform is so the wealthy can have a legal, permanent underclass available to perform menial tasks and duties for them.

As opposed to a permanent underclass to perform menial tasks for them that is technically illegal but legal in practice because the laws are rarely enforced? It might not be the smartest thing to publicly admit that you're doing it, but she's just stating the obvious here: there's a lot of businesses built on illegal immigration, so if you aren't going to enforce the laws anyway you might as well replace them with laws that reflect the reality of the situation. It's certainly not anywhere near the level of the worst republican stupidity, which is both political suicide and hilariously out of touch with reality.

Because only wealthy people use hotels or eat in diners.

There is already a way for illegal immigrants to get citizenship, and/or work here legally. It's called "leave the country and apply for a visa like everyone else".

I was in Chicago a couple years back when Games Day was held there. The maids at the hotel didn't seem to be illegals - unless there's a huge influx of illegals from Africa that nobody's been told about.

So are we going to skirt over the rarely enforced part? How about an actual crackdown on illegal immigrants instead of states handing them benefits, and a witch hunt for businesses that employ those people. Why are we sitting here trying to make illegals legal instead of going harder after businesses that employ them in the first place?
Clearly the hotels by the water are prime targets for illegals, so do some damn investigating

But if we go after the businesses, we're taking jobs from Americans!11!

Well, this is the real problem, isn't it?
These jobs exist. Most American's just think they're too good for them.

Because they are not marketed to the American people persay. Unlike specialist fields that people spend tens of thousands of dollars in schooling to get, yet are un able to find work because some one else got to it first.

Thats like, 60% of the population.....

People protesting the minimum wage? "go educate yourself so you can get a good job"
Got a degree but can't make a good living? "go flip burgers or work as a maid".
I've said it before, Ouze, but I have a lot of trouble sympathizing with people that have a degree and can't "make a good living" because I've been there and I made the necessary sacrifices (I had two jobs for nearly three years).
When I worked at FedEx, I worked with a lot of blue collar dudes with no college education. That also meant they had no student loans. They all drove nice cars, many had more than one nice car and or motorcycles, and were able to go on vacations. If you don't have that immediate debt, you can live plenty comfortably on "menial" jobs as long as you're responsible and are willing to make those sacrifices. I envied their lack of college debt all the time.
Does it suck to be "underemployed" (and I hate this word, because I really don't like the elitist connotation)? It absolutely does. Again, I was there for close to three years, and nearly all of my student loans are private (my parents make "too much") so you can guess how willing to work with me my lenders were. It was hard. But I did what I needed to in order to pay the bills.
Landscaping and housekeeping jobs are perfect for this.
Automatically Appended Next Post: You'll also find this pretty consistent with my stance that not everyone needs to go to a university. Trades are incredibly valuable, and can provide for an incredibly comfortable life, especially when paired with a large job market for them and little to no student loan debt.
