This would suck pretty bad for the people outlined in the article. It appears the postal service would take a major financial hit if they continued deliveries, but according to this article, a third of Canadians living in rural areas would be affected. The image of having to drive miles to town in the middle of a Canadian winter to get mail is a tad harsh if the one driving is disabled or elderly.

Somewhere in the steamy jungles of the south...

For some reason this doesn't seem very...Canadian. Seems more like something that would happen here in 'Merica. Our Post Office is already a disaster...

The article says its cutting home deliveries to urban areas, but the OP says rural areas, which is a pretty significant difference. Cutting it from urban areas isn't nearly as bad as it sounds, considering nearly every suburban community uses large communal mailboxes anyways, which are rarely more than a block or two away.

The people in small isolated communities who would have to make longer drives to post offices are still getting home delivered mail, from what I read.

Wasn't this because Canadians are barely using snail mail in favor of email?

I'd imagine so. It is 2014 afterall. I don't see this being an issue really. Much more important things to be concerned with cost cutting.

And by affected, it means they'll have to walk/drive a little further to get their mail, like most of the population does already.

The people who have problems with this are the elderly, and if they have trouble getting their mail, they probably have more serious problems to be concerned with anyways.

I've lived in small rural towns for the past few years, and most people are either going to continue getting their mail delivered (remember that it the urban population getting cut) or will have to go a little further to the community mail box/post office.

There are much bigger things to be concerned with in this country than a slight inconvenience to get snail mail. Besides, commercial carriers are still handling a lot of the packages from orders online, but I don't have any figures to determine the amount of packages that get sent through either stream to either confirm or deny it.

*Edit* It should also be noted that a majority of the population is urban based anyways, and this cut only affects them. The rural communities are still getting serviced, inferred from the article.

They also plan on building more boxes, which should help keep distance to their mail box from getting too large for people.

yeah exactly...

its a total non issue... 60-80% + of people are already under this same system of 50-100 mailboxes being in their apartment or at the cul de sac entrance or whatever.

larger packages will continue as normal.

You're not supposed to agree with me. How can we have a proper OT discussion with all the Canadians agreeing!?

It still wouldn't be all that good, since if you weren't agreeing, you'd just spend pages apologizing about it.
