The more I read up on Common Core the more annoyed I get. Someone decided to take simple math and make it untenable. Perhaps the idea is to keep parents from being able to help their kids with their homework? This is the best example I could find. Maybe someone can explain why this is better, but it seems ridiculous.

WHAT THE IS THAT?
This explains why the Boy makes bank tutoring people in math.

I ran out of fingers and my back is too stiff from doing an evenings painting to take off my socks just yet.
Also, I have no idea what that thing is, I'll stick to colour theory.
Oli: Can I be an orc?
Everyone: No.
Oli: But it fits through the doors, Look!
That's a ridiculous way of doing it...
Why even teach that?

I am not defending common core or demeaning it I know what the intent is suppose to be. I think there is a better way to teach kids to think "outside the box"

If I find out my boyz are in a common core school... I'm moving them.
There was a period of time when they hit multicolumn math and were taught this werid cubist method that no one could figure out.
We showed the Boy how you're SUPPOSED to do it and he got instantly and taught everyone else how to do it. They got As. Those he didn't teach got C-Fs.

27 + 18 ; Start
27 + ( 10 + 8 ) ; Separate the tens and ones
27 + ( 10 + (3 + 5 )) ; We want a number that we can add to the “7” in the first number to get a nice round one
27 + ( 10 + 3 + 5 ) ; Just dropping some parenthesis here.
27 + ( 3 + 10 + 5 ) ; Shuffling numbers around. Addition is transitive, we are allowed.
( 27 + 3 ) + ( 10 + 5 ) ; Now we have that 3 over with the 7. See how happy it is?
30 + 15 ; Hey! we’re actually adding numbers.
45 ; End
It’s a little screwed up, but does work. I basically use a system like this when I’m adding numbers in my head. When The Boy came home with math homework using this stuff (he’s in second grade) it took me a bit to figure out what they were talking about. But I’m no stranger to having math hurt my brain, so I think I figured out what they are up to. Can’t say I agree with it, but hey, not everyone thinks the same way.

Could you have done that without already knowing the answer? Thats a serious question.

Can't answer for Nevelon, but I use this system all the time and it's not a problem. It's probably habitual, I've done it this way as long as I can remember doing maths, so I'm used to it.
For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.
Why is it so hard to just do 26 + 17 = 26 + 10 + 7 = 36 + 7 = 43? Then again I'm borderline Rain Man status when it comes to simple arithmetic so I don't understand at all how people have difficulty with it.
The only way we can ever solve anything is to look in the mirror and find no enemy
