just got new dreadnaught its close combat and im thinking of drop podding it in as a shock unit. its venerable with power claw and that weird spear hand thing that i can quite remember the name of. is this a good idea for a starting point or a complete waste of points?
it will be a DA force usually fighting Chaos (does inner circle special rule apply to deathwing dreads?) but sometimes eldar and orcs.

Dropping dreads can be vulnerable to interceptor. Also being out maneuvered and getting shot in rear armour. But as a way of getting close and alpha striking an opponent drop dreads can be pretty good. Getting a heavy weapon shot in, often twin linked, at full ballistics because of relentless.

The main issue with podding melee Dreads in is that they're not too fast. Since they have to stand around for a turn before charging it's not that hard for enemies to move away or throw some units in front as a screen.
Dreads don't have the Inner Circle rule, however Venerable dreads have the Deathwing Vehicle rule which is similar (but better).

Are you sure you don't have a Blood Angels Librarian Dreadnought there ?

Kit bash, im just playing it as a DW Ven Dread. and thanks for the tips xttz how do you think i can get around this? drop some tac marines in as well to cause some harm or just abandon the whole idea? i need it to get close fast and it cant do that deploying like usual as i think it will just get shot to pieces in the first turn or 2

I tried dropping in my BA furioso dread a few times, usually it only served as a distractor. Everyone knows the damage they can do, and he rarely made it long enough to assault.
I was however able to get at least 1 turn of shooting with him and sometimes it would pay off and sometimes not.
Either way, he usually was wasted points even as a distractor. I switched up my tactics and now throw him in a raven so he can assault out of it.
I think if you went balls to the wall and maybe dropped 2-3 in on one turn you might have better luck due to target saturation.

Dropping dreads can be a powerful tactic if your opponent isnt used to dealing with it. The key is to mess with their target priority. If you can give their heavy guns something else to shoot at it could buy you a turn. I Play SW and so my DA knowledge is a little light. I have had luck giving them heavy flamers on their melee arms so they can put out alot of wounds the turn they arrive. I typically play tau or IG so their puny armor saves can't take the heat! DO you have a variant that has 13 Front AV? This can add to his survivability because theres a prevalence of str 6 and 7 shots out there these days. Venerable will only get you so far. Make the pod a threat too if possible maybe they will spread their fire. Deathwind Missile Launchers might help in that regard.

Numbers are needed to make Dreadnoughts work. I run 4 IH Ironclads at 1850 all dropping first turn so thats fun and rather good as it takes people by surprise.

It can be a good tactic, I like regular dread with MM. I usually like to pop a tank or something with some points. Yes he will die in the next turn but...
Positive side is my 100 point took out your 250.
There are problems like the dice gods and you roll a one. Or interceptor rule, scatter, and Coteaz. I am sure there is more.
I do agree with rezyn and feasible. More dreads would-be better
It is all in the risk your willing to take

Use blos to protect it from heavy weapons and it's gona be a worthwile thing. Doesn't really work vs eldar cause they have too many heavy weapons on fast platforms...but what's working vs power cheezy eldar lists in this edition anywayz?.. Double heavy flamer dread is actually a good thing vs any troops. It's not a regular dread though, but an ironclad.

most of time i use 2x fragioso (furioso with frag cannon) and drop them close to enemy lines to 3x template them all
however, that's not working every time, so i sometime swap for a melta dreadnaught and aim for big tank/enemies; i'm also thinking about using missile launcher on pod (just to make pod a viable intercept otpion) or librarian to cast SoS or other nice power in the enemy unit. however, i never use this tactic

the only problem now with dreads in drop pods .are the ability to take fire with the hull pts before you can charge the turn after
if a dred came down behide me id pour all the fire into it to drop the hull pts to get rid of it, but that can work to your advantage if you use it as a faint for a flank attack.
also you'll just might have the dred survive to reinforce your flank attack
or pay for a storm bolter /melter under your power fist to get abit of fire in the the turn you come down in

You really do need 2 Dreads to drop on turn 1, or the solo dread will get taken down quickly.
When I get around to it, I'll be dropping mine behind the enemy, but off to one side. A main weapon with longer range and shots than a MM would fire at a juicy tank, and keep the flamer on the fist for assaulting a HW or sniper squad the next turn.

how do you get 2 dreads down in the 1st turn in 2 drop pods?as you can have only 1 dread per pod unless you have 3 or 4 of them/other troops in drop pods
otherwise you have to wait till the 2nd turn & hope you get the right dice (other wise they dont show up)
and thats starts getting alot of pts

right so i tried it out and it worked fantastically,
used the dread in a drop in turn two once chaos had moved forward a fair amount the slammed into the middle of them. used as many of my guys as possible to blast away their heavy weapons and then the dread chewed up about a squad by himself he was still standing in turn three (probably due to the dice gods more than anything) and was definitley worth bringing alone as he almost doubled his points in kills after charging a fleeing LR after i brought it down to 1hp.
think i will have to use it again before i decide its worth properly.

"you have 3 or 4 of them/other troops in drop pods"
3 pods is the recommended minimum, I've heard, so's to avoid having just 1 pod stranded behind enemy lines.
You can always drop it empty, too, if you want to keep the contents on the table as early as possible.
I've really got to get another pod.
also, dropping more than 1 per turn helps against Interceptor. A Quad Gun can only shoot 1 target at once, so drop 2 pods, and only 1 will get hit (if there's only 1 Interceptor weapon).
