Subject: big bad yeti's painting log... dark and brutal space wolves...bad moon orks.. a new warboss or two..
hey guys and gals, I've got another painting blog somewhere about orks but I felt like I needed a change from painting green and red for a bit! My Ork mob is slowly growing but work has been slow for a while and coupled with the fact we were flooded out before xmas moneys a bit tight at the moment, so I figured I'd re-purpose some of the old space marine models I have laying about and try some more in depth conversions and a bit of green stuff!
I've always loved the idea of the space wolves, but I've always seen them as being a lot more brutal and gothic looking than how most of the GW models for them look, so my aim is to create something from the old models and bits I already have which better fits how I see the wolves.
I'm not really a gamer as such so they might be equipped with the wrong weapons or whatever but i'm not really worried as long as I have a cool model at the end of it!
I kind of got into it before I thought about making a blog about it, but I thought this would be a good way of getting feedback and pointers about how to get better! so one or two models are more or less done but i'll explain what I've done....
afraid the pics ain't the best but I hope they give some idea of what im trying to achieve, I have a box full of marines I undercoated ready for a dark angels army that never took off, they were cheap ebay bargains but im stuck with their poses and weapons so i'm limited with how I can alter them, I've done 3 so far as a taster to see if I liked it enough to push on and I did, so I have!
this is my first attempt at using greenstuff for what its intended for so im hoping the results will get better with experience but im quite pleased with the results so far, I started off pretty simple with a few scraps of wolf pelt here and there...
Spoiler:
afraid I've not got a pic of the other two yet, will get some better ones with the proper camera when I dig it out!
i had a set of dark angels veterans in the box which I'd put together and half painted, those robes looked like they might be a good base for a fur coat.... i wanted to make this guy into a character so i figured he'd make a good wolf priest, im not a fan of the wolf scull helmets but i do like a good scary mask so i carved out the old space marine face, cut the front off an ork scull from one of the ork kits and with a bit of trimming and glue it fits quite nicely and looks pretty menacing, then finished off with some chaos weapons/arms/shoulder pads with the icons removed as i prefer the gothic archaic look of them, quite pleased with this guy overall, he has the more feral, brutal look i imagined. oh the backpacks ain't painted yet hence their all missing!
quite chuffed how the fur when on him tbh!
i was pleased with him so i thought I'd try another, he's not complete yet and the furs almost a bit too much i think, but again i used the veterans robes as a good solid base for the fur so i had to follow them. again some chaos parts to keep him looking mean...
the fur looks a lot better in the flesh, the light has made it look very blobby in the pic for some reason...
i won a box of space wolves models on ebay cheap so I've got some more parts i can incorporate, just a couple of quick kit bash conversions and some time spent chopping and tweaking to get some more interesting poses,
again chaos helmet with the horns removed and filed back...
not a good photo showing the pose but the paintwork seems to be getting a little better! or i hope it is anyway!
and last but not least just started on this guy! found a tutorial somewhere on the internet about using the back of a chaos warrior couples with a space marine front torso, i happened to have one of each so i gave it a bash! had to elongate the shaft of the axe so the arms would work, should look quite interesting once it painted up though! i might re do the greenstuff on the axe, not 100% happy how its looking at the moment, might be better making the whole shaft look like its wrapped rather than the top bit....
i'll keep this updated a little better now!
any thoughts of pointers would be much appreciated!
steve

Looking good, although I'm not a fan of the full-on fur robes.

I think the amount of fur on the DA vets look good (I imagine the more fur the better hunter, kinda) and I also like the yellow pads, the tone seems to fit your goal.

Cheers! Quite enjoying doing these, did a little more on the guy with the frost axe, and started on a third DA veteran conversion, tried to elongate the beard and thried to get a shagy look to the fur on his robes, also swapped out his torso front to try and keep it looking a little more interesting than a ball of fur! quite pleased with it so far...
Spoiler:
Frustrating waiting for the green stuff to dry!

Looking good, I like the style you have gone with. My only 'issue' so to speak (can't think of the right word atm) is the amount of fur on some of them. One of them looks a little like he is wearing a bath robe, and I've personally never pictured them quite so wrapped in pelts as this, It's not a criticism with them just personal preference. Looking forward to seeing where you take this project in the future and what other characters you are planning on doing

yeah I totally agree about the bath robe guy hence I've tried to tone it back a little with the last one, I made the mistake of trying to cover every little bit of the original dark angel robe and tbh it's just too much! but live and learn!
still i quite like him even if he does look like a furball with a chain sword!
more coming soon!

not had much spare time this weekend but managed to get a little paint on a couple...
painted the last converted veteran / wolfguard, really pleased how he turned out, I think the horns on the shoulder pad could have maybe been half the size, might alter them yet but im pleased enough with the rest of it, the fur robe looks pretty good I think, not as in your face as the others but enough to hide what he was!
tweaked the paint a little on the other guy too,
edit, put some spoiler tabs in to cut down the pics loading...
Spoiler:
tried to get a few more better pics of the other guys too,
and a group shot of the grey hunters so far...
and not space wolves but I love the model and I cant be bothered finding my ork blog my stand in ork warboss, a slight conversion on a kromlech mega armoured ork, im not keen on the original head so I swapped it out for a maxmini cybork head, which meant some cutting and chopping of the armour around the neck joint, and the power claw is from the maxmini badass warbiker boss model, makes a mean looking warboss I recon!
and some nobz just for the hell of it!

cheers! that's the aim! although its also just the way I paint so it'd probably be more of a triumph if I managed a nice neat clean model!
well a couple more WIP's, I noticed the dark vengeance librarian model in the box which was begging to be used somewhere, I had to strip the paint off him so its early work so far but im picturing him as a rune priest, with a triangular pelt to cover the dark angels emblem on his chest, and some other wolfy spikey bits.. his hammer is a combination of the power maul from the DA veterans box with the head from the space wolves box, not totally sure about it yet, might tweak it a little more...
the special weapons guy I imagined is in the middle of changing weapons as close combat ensues, or maybe taking a carefully aimed shot that his melta couldn't make...either way I just didn't want a boring static pose, theres enough of them in the marines I have to convert and cant change because their glued too well! gotta add a little interest somehow!
and the last guys the final DA veteran turned wolf, its a bit hard to see without paint but his beard is bunched into a band halfway down, and I've gone for the longer fur look to his robe as I really liked the look of it on the last guy, really looking forward to painting him tbh!
Spoiler:
really enjoying doing these guys, breaking it up into modelling and painting a couple at a time seems to be keeping my interest a bit!

Well I wasn't totally happy with the pose on the beardy guy so I did some swapping and he's ended up with the hammer rather than the lightning claws, just got to do a pair of shoulder pads for him and a backpack and he's not far off done, quite pleased how he and the other beardy one have turned out tbh!
Spoiler:
im halfway through painting the rune priest, he's now getting a frost axe which im painting separate to make life a little easier! should hopefully have him done tonight
and last but not least I wanted a cool wolf lord that fits in with the dark and gritty theme, so I grabbed one of the cool new forgeworld red butcher models, and some lightning claws, and with a bit of greenstuff work he's starting to take shape! I really love the base model, and it has the gothic/archaic look I'm really aiming for! still need to finalise the pose and do a little more work with the green stuff to make him look a little more wolfey!

They are so dark... and viking.... and brutal... Amon Amarth would be very proud of you but its almost too dark and brutal. Its almost like the smell of *Sniff sniff* Chaos
That's how I imagine them, almost using the same tactics as the nightlords, striking fear into their enemy's by both sight and reputation, being so brutal in their war making that they stand on a knife edge of being branded renegade... and lets face it there's no point in being brutal, mercyless, killing machines if your gonna go prancing around in baby blue power armour swinging a fluffy wolf tail about. Nope you need spikes, horns, scary trophies, and beards!

Well a quick update, I had some time off today so I cracked on with a little more painting, I put the melta guy together and other than a backpack he's more or less done, there's a little battle damage to his helmet (aka wasn't quite careful enough with the knife when removing the horns!) but it worked out ok as a rank and file trooper, I think maybe a pelt might have helped make him look a little more sinister but I don't want to over do it!
Spoiler:
rune priest also is more or less finished.. sorry the pics a little blury, but it turned out ok considering it was a model I would probably never have got round to painting otherwise...
and finally I got started painting the wolf lord, im not finished with him yet but im quite pleased with him already, he looks suitable to lead this barbaric little warband I think!
and another little group shot.
hope you guys like!

Well I decided I'd had enough of wolf skins and beards for one week so I stripped back some nurgle terminators I bought back when I got back into the hobby a while back. I'd painted them badly in pre heresy death guard colours and tbh they looked pants, they were made up of FW torsos, space wolf claws and loyalist legs when I got them cheap off ebay. I altered a couple of them to make them a little more interesting but the legs still looked too clean so im trying to tweek them a bit more this time to break up the clean armour! this guy and the cultist are basically a test for the colour scheme, I didn't want to go so far as making them all look like they've been rolling about in mud for the last 500 years but I wanted a putrid sort of look and tentacles! gotta love tentacles! I also wanted more of a vile loyalist marine look to the normal marines, im not a big fan of the look of the stock chaos marines so im tempted to get some mormal ones and nurgle them up a bit! not sure yet...
anyway these are Work in Progress, need to do a lot more painting yet.

still trying to re-use models I've got and never bothered with, so I wanted to alter a couple of the dark vengeance cultists to better work with the nurgle theme of my chaos guys! after these two are done I want to go back and finish the space wolves I've done so far and get those units finished! or that's the plan anyway!
the cultist leader is based on the cultist with a shotgun from the DV box, good bit of work on him! the other guy is just a quick kit bash to make the heavy guy look a little more suitable! still some more painting to do on the leader but quite pleased with how he looks so far..

been a while since I've updated this as I've been busy fixing my camper and bug while the weathers been better! still been painting a little tho, moved back onto orks at the moment, I've been eyeing up the new ogryn models with an eye to making some meganobz but they worked out a little bigger than I expected so they're working out well as various boss figures! the first ones a badmoon warboss, also making a big mek for the evil sunz part of the mob, and not sure what the 3rd is going to make yet, really pleased how the first came out tbh! certainly has the stature of a boss!
anyway couple of quick pics....
Spoiler:
quick Q how do I change the name of the topic? since its not just about space wolves now?

Have you read Blood of Asaheim (if you haven't do, oh and battle of the fang as well). This is how I envisioned them from this writing style. I think it's totally dependant on what back ground you read. Some of the back ground sort of fits the light airy power armour others make them seem very dark and foreboding. Looking forward to seeing more of dem wolves

No I've not had chance to read it yet, I'm slowly working my way through the HH series, just read thousand sons and the way the space wolves were portrayed in that really hit a note with me! I'm juggling the Orks and Wolves at the moment, going to get the current wolves finished off and based up, then look at making up some wolfguard terminators to go with the red butcher conversion!

Managed to get on a little more this week with the next big boss, this time a big mek, quite pleased with the overall look of him, the base models don't give a lot of posing options so theres a bit of green stuff to make the joints work and still a little more to go...
sorry for the crap photo's I dropped my phone the other day and its not been right since!
Spoiler:
I picked up a new airbrush this week too, I'm still waiting on a regulator coming for my little compressor so I cant use it to its potential yet but I had to have an experiment with a nurgle terminator I had sat waiting, just used it for the base coat and picking out the shadows and highlights on the armour but im really pleased with the results so far, certainly a lot crisper and neater than the other terminator a few posts back up!
and finally just a bout finished the looters, still need some more but this batch is about there, just need to tweak the osl a little when I get the regulator and I can tone down the air pressure!
any thoughts of critique very welcome!

well I finished the second one! this time a biiiig mek, with kustom mega blaster, as that's what I had laying about! I used my new airbrush on this one so its a bit of trial and error, im pleased with him but the photo's don't really show the shading on his skin up very well, i'll try and get my proper camera setup and get some better pics next time.
last one will be a rogue ogryn that's managed to gather a following of orks who like the way he smashes up the runty 'umies
