Hey everyone, and welcome to my corner of Mordheim. In the next few months my gaming group and I will hopefully be restarting the greatest fantasy game GW has ever produced. For those who haven't played, Mordheim is a fantsy skirmish game of roughly 5-20 models that is ideally played as a campaign. The basic rules for the game are still available on GWs site and there are tons of fan made and unofficial stuff floating around the internet. There are dozens of warbands available for almost every faction and the small model count means that converters and modelers like me can really take the time to make dynamic Fastasy models that would not be feasible in the rank-and-file system of WFB.
Our group is planning on using our own set of house rules regarding Hired Swords, mercenaries or allies that a player can hire but aren't part of their warband. In the past we have had problems with either everyone taking the same 1-2 hired swords or or others taking 4-5 of them and really unbalancing the game. Our plan is to introduce a set of "house hired swords" that players can choose from. Players may only choose from the ones available and if there aren't any available, the player cannot hire any outside assistance. We are also implementing a rule where players have the opportunity to steal hired swords from their opponent before a battle. Before deployment, the player wishing to steal the hired sword makes an offer of x gold coins to the mercenary. (Gold coins are analogous to points in Mordheim) the controlling player then has the opportunity to meet or exceed the bid. The hired sword will then join whoever paid more for their services, and the game starts.

As one of the skirmish organizers for our shop, it's my job to build and paint a bunch of the hired swords, as well as finish my own warband and a couple house warbands for people to borrow or fight as part of specific scenarios. I'm hoping that this plog will help motivate me to finish everything I'm supposed to get done, and hopefully gives you guys some ideas for conversions of your own. Constructive Criticism and ideas from you guys are always welcome.

I guess the best place to start is my old warband, skaven night runners. I had a blast with these guys but It's time for them to be retired for new and better things first up is a pic of the entire warband and display tray

And a few close ups of my favorite guys from the group. Heres my 4 heroes, 1 assassin, 1 sorcerer and 2 black skaven, 1 with fighting claws and another with weeping blades

and my 2 young bloods from the IoB warpfire team

Finally for now, heres a few henchman (rank and file for you who haven't played)
1 with dagger/sling, 2 with club and sword

Nice work glad to see more Mordheim on here. Really like the Assassin Adept in particular

I have wanted to try Mordeim for a long time this makes me want to play even more plus its SKAVEN the best army every haha
I really like the conversions you've done there and the board too!

The sorcerer is probably my favorite where did you get that staff?
I have been doing a few conversions with my Skaven heros (since I don't want any repeats for the IoB chieftain and Engineer) I'd really like to make one with that staff!

Thanks guys

@chiefbigredman the staff is off of the plague priest from the screaming bell.

A few more guys I'm working on at the moment

first, a halfling thief

Next, a wip arabian merchant from a high elf archer

finally for now, some of the new dwarfs, my next warband. I love the new kits but hate all the old plastics. These guys were my attempt to scratch the stunty itch without spending an obscene amount to build an all longbeard/ironbreaker army

my first guy and color scheme

and a look from the back. everyone will have cloaks like this when I'm done.

I just noticed some rough gs work around the cowl, but it's not noticeable on the model- stupid camera

A few henchman, 1 with dwarven axe/shield, 2 with axe and hammer

lastly, here's the bases I'm planning on using for my next gen mardheimers. The skaven were textured cardstock, which worked very well for the time but now seems very flat and uninspired. I'm going for a much more muddied/ destroyed urban look on my new bases

Nice work. I like the Arabian merchant. Nice feel to the model. I think I'll convert a Sci-fi version of that one.

The armor on the dwarf is well done. The beard could do with a highlight IMO.

I had the opportunity to get a bunch of stuff done last night, so here's another update

Here's a Kislevite ranger, using parts from the bretonnian, marauder and empire lines

one of the many future pit fighters (sorry about the bad quality photo)

and a bounty hunter, slight conversions from a greatsword champion. He was already painted, but got some touchups and a new swanky base

I also had the opportunity to start base coating a few more dwarves

not sure what to do with the shields, so it's blue tacked on right now

So I've gotten a lot done in the past few days and have another quick update for you guys.

The kislevite got a bit of paint on him

And 2 more dwafs were finished. I need to stop as I love the new plastics an am seriously considering an army of them

I also re-based another arabian merchant and 2 halfling scouts. Both are in dire need of a touch-up

And lastly, some gs work, first on anoter pit fighter

and my most ambitious gs attempt, an emissary of chaos. He's the first time I've tried to sculpt anything more than gaps/fur or cloaks, and I;m pleased as a first attempt but I'm not sure if he's good enough to include or if I should break him down and go again, Maybe a coat of paint will fix him

Ah, Mordheim. How I miss it. I used to work at a GW retail store in Manhattan. When Mordheim came out I built so much terrain it covered three 4x4 tables in dense medieval urban ruin wonderland. Sigh. We had a giant campaign with the grand prize being all the terrain. At the end there was a tie and since there was so much terrain, the 2 players decided to split it instead of fighting to break the tie.

Your stuff looks great. Your greenstuff is great for a novice. I have trouble keeping the stuff from sticking to my hands. I think your chaos warrior looks just awesome and I'm sure your painting ability will hide any blemishes you think might be on it. Always remember that you are your worst critic. Other people will see the masterpiece where you only see amateur attempt. But believe me, you've made a masterpiece. Don't drive yourself crazy trying to make it "perfect". There's no such thing as perfect. Leave this one and build another. Use the first as a reference for yourself. Use it as a visual aid on what to improve.

All this stuff is great. Totally subbed.

I appreciate it Waaazag. I can definitely see an improvement over my first guys, but I still fit somewhere between "novice" and "child with playdoh." but I'm rapidly becoming comfortable with working gs. Terrain is also on the list of stuff to make as well. Our plan is to have 5ish 4x4 tables with 12 square feet of terrain each. I'm dreading having to make that much of anything, but I'll put it on here when the time comes.

Here's another quick saturday update for everyone

A goblin assassin hired sword

And my dwarf noble got himself a few basecoats and finished skin/cloak

And lastly for today, the start of my warbands display board. I want it to look like the dwarfs just left some nobleman's manor, so there's gonna be a toppled statue in the middle and a big impressive wall to keep out poor people behind them.

This is what people at my shop use to transport our armies. It comes with 2 trays for 7.50 and is roughly 2 inches tall.

Next I cut out a stencil to make sure the display fit. Eventually I'd like to have 2 warbands inhabiting each tray.

I then traced the stencil onto a piece of pink insulation foam and cut it out, making sure it also fit in the box.

To finish up, I decided where everyone was going and traced the bases onto the paper, which I transferred to the foam. If you look at the upper right corner of the paper, you can see my rough ideas for where the scenery is going to go.

As always, comments and criticisms are welcome. Thanks for looking

WHOOP! Mordheim! Great to see someone else with an interest! You've really impressed with your Skaven warband! Great use of Stormvermin models and the Skaven Warlord. The Dwarfs look ace also but I think my favourite is the Goblin Assassin! I'll be keeping an eye on this thread! Subbed!

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Unfortunetaly, my camera ate the rest of the work in progress shots of the display board, so it's next update will be when I get it back from our resident airbrusher. I do have an update on terrain, though. Talking to people in the shop we could have as many as 15!! players for Mordheim this year. That's more than we regularly have for 40k. That also means we need a lot of terrain. Preferably 6+ tables worth. We've enlisted the help of a few of the players who didn't have the sense to run away when we asked for volunteers, so I may start adding pics of terrain that others have built for our tables.

Here's a breakdown of how I am making out terrain. I start with a piece of foamcore board. The one I got was a 4'x3' piece for 8 bucks. Not at all expensive. I also picked up a bunch of balsa wood sticks, about 15 or so, which also cost about 8 bucks.

I start by cutting out a square in the rough size of the building. I made a template on graph paper showing window spacing and floors, each floor being about 2.5inches (8cm) high. I then sketched out the rough shape of the building onto my square. When I'm done, it looks like this.

After that, I cut out all the windows, doors and the walls. After cutting out everything, I score the sides where the building corners meet and fold them.

I saved the piece from between the roof (the top rectangle in the first picture) and used that to make the floor.

A quick and important note: do not throw away any of the bigger scraps. Keep those in a stack as you will need them later.

This particular building is now ready for detailing. For larger and more impressive buildings, use the same method as above but leave an extra side off. This building is only a 3.5 sided tower and 2, 2 sided buildings. After I cut out everything, I glue all the disparate parts together using foamsafe superglue. If you use accelerator, be careful not to use too much, as excess can cause the foam to melt.

I wanted to turn this building into a larger manor with a staircase leading to the door. Nobles gotta have a way to keep the poors from breaking into windows and looting everything.

To make the stairs, I grabbed a 1/2in thick piece of pink insulation foam and sketched out another rough design on the block. This will end up being the railing and supports for the steps.

I then carefully cut it out, and then cut it in half, making 2, 1/4in thick railings

I also sketched and cut out the base of the stairs, which I also cut in half. It's important to note that you need a really sharp x-acto blade for these steps. In the railing picture you can see tearing on the lower arch where I blade was dulled from use.

Here's a shot of all 3 pieces together showing what the steps will eventually look like.

Comments and criticisms are, of course, always welcome and as always, thanks for looking.

I really like how you made the frame of the stair case. I'm probably going to be looting that idea. As for buildings and ruins, I highly recommend doing an image search for World War 1 or World war 2 city ruins to get some visual reference on what medieval European cities look like in ruins. Trust me, photo reference makes building terrain so much easier. So far so good, though.

Thanks guys. We're trying to stick to the fine line of realism and play- ability, and we also want to use these for bolt action.

@dantay: all of the dwarfs are from the new hammerers/longbeards kit with a few hammers and crossbows from the regular dwarf kits.

I got my first display tray back from my bud, sprayed black without any of the foam dissolving. Here it is waiting for some paint

I gave the stones a heavy drybrush of medium grey and a lighter highlight of white

And my camera ate the rest of the progression shots, so here's the tray with the rest of the basecoats. There will eventually be busted doors in the gate and possibly a statue at the end of the pillar if I can find the space for it.

I also got started on another building and started on the timber supports, similar to this real house. Due to the number that have to be made, the supports won't be as numerous or intricate as real life, but I hope it will look good enough as is

Here's what I got so far

After I got the basic walls done, I started laying out the balsa wood with pva glue

My plan is to put a ruined wall/courtyard in the rear of the building

Thanks Guys. I've been on a bit of a binge lately, so this may be a rather large update.

I added a courtyard onto the L building. I started by cutting another small piece of insulation foam. Using an ordinary pin, I drew out stones on the piece, using a little pressure to make the indentations between the stones. I left part of it untextured to simulate plaster placed over the stones.

Using an x-acto, I cut out the walls along the stone lines, and cut out a few areas to break up the width of the foam.

Here's the result attached to the building

I also started building a few intact buildings. I figured that not all buildings, especially well constructed ones, would survive the comet and looting. These will also be suitable for warhammmer fantasy/bolt action/battles outside the city of mordheim.

These will be made of insulation foam and are very quick and easy to make.

I started with a familiar block of foam, and sketched out the 4 walls of the building.

I then carefully cut out the walls of the building. I usually make 3-4 shallow cuts as opposed to 1 deep one. Shallower cuts allow for more control and help keep the cuts straight. After I had the pieces, I glued it together with foamsafe superglue. PVA works, but it usually takes a while to dry.

I also decided to add a shed to the side, and make the building seem less square. Here it is glued together.

I then cut out the doors and windows, but I left them in the walls. These will provide support for the doors and shutters.

Using the same method as making the courtyard walls, I drew stones into the wall. This one is going to be all stone.

Once this is done. It's time for the doors and windows. Using balsa, I made the doors and window shutters and glued them into the frame. I pushed the cut out foam back, but I glued these in as well to provide more support. GW used to make doors and windows, and I think other companies currently make them, but I didn't have any and wanted to make these on the cheap. I also added balsa beams to the corners to hide the seam and add support. It may not be historically accurate, but I think it works.

Now its time for the roof. I cut thin strips of card, GW boxes work perfectly for this. I then cut thin slats about halfway up the sides

These were glued onto the outbuilding, starting at the bottom.

I did this until I reached the top, and then added a solid strip

Here's the whole thing done. With accelerator, the whole thing took about an hour.

Comments and criticisms are always welcome. Thanks for viewing
