I really want to build a shotgun vets squad, but I'm not sure the best way to equip them. For the moment they'll probably be footslogging. I'm thinking either demo charge and 3 meltas or demo and 3 flamers, and is harker a good idea?

3000pts 30 wins 2 draws 12 loses

5000pts 13 wins 1 draws 9 losses

WoC "where the points don't matter" 6 wins 0 draws 4 losses

Room

1) Chimera, 3 meltaguns or plasmaguns

2) Chimera, 3 flamer

3) 3 flamer, demolition, drop from Valkyrie

4) Harker and 3 plasma

But there is no much sense they have lasguns or shotguns, because of low effect

It's not the most effective, but I've found Carapace, 3 flamers and a power fist with shotties is a neat counter-charge unit, especially with a PF lord Commissar or priest. It's by no means optimised, but not terrible, and I think it's probably better to use them for counter-attack than playing aggressively.

I like them with demolitions and three meltas, mounted in a Chimera or Valkyrie. If you're going to footslog them, though, then you'll probably want to either run them with flamers as a charge deterrent (it's not quite as efficient as a PCS with flamers and it doesn't take advantage of your increased ballistics, but give them demolitions and they can make short-ranged template hell as well as have really nice anti-tank capability) or and/or keep them behind a tank that wants to move forward or a cheap infantry squad to help them close the distance. No experience with Harker, so I can't help you there.

Really, it comes down to "do you need more anti-tank/monster, or more anti-infantry".

If you take Harker you can't have Carapace armour sadly

I give all my Veteran Sergeants shotguns anyway because blasting the enemies of the Imperium with shotgun shells is awesome in concept and game-wise its more sensible than a Las Pistol and CCW loadout.

You shoot far more than you actually get to throw attacks in combat, so the shotgun is a no-brainer on the Sergeant.

As for giving the squaddies shotties, I probably wouldn't bother. Even if you find a target you can actually assault like GEQ, do you really want to increase the distance to the unit even more than losing the guys at the front of your unit has already accomplished?

If you're determined to run a shotgun squad, it should be a 3x melta squad in a Vendetta. Any other build and transport-type is going to risk being stuck on foot and out of 12" range, rendering most of your weapons useless,

and with melta and a vendetta, you are safely going to ensure you'll always be within 12" when you disembark, as well as being able to fire all of your weapons when/if you choose to assault, versus a lasgun/melta squad which just can fire the meltaguns.
